There seems to be a general consensus on this board that the goal on a human meter (ReliOn) is between 50-120. Those are numbers I’ve seen repeatedly.

But what is the goal on an AlphaTRAK / Pet Meter? If you have any ideas, please let me know.

My vet did a comparison today (see the top numbers). The numbers seem to be in line with other high-number comparisons I have found on this board.

• AlphaTRAK : 487 vs. ReliOn: 382 [My test at vets today]
• AlphaTRAK : 456 vs. ReliOn: 373
• AlphaTRAK: 383 vs. ReliOn: 250
• AlphaTRAK: 120 vs. ReliOn: 59

Here are some other words of wisdom related to this comparison that I have collected off this board:

• If I use the ReliOn, should I always add 20% [vs. AlphaTRAK] to get a more accurate reading?
• I did side by sides and it is more than [add] 20%.
• The lower numbers do seem to be closer.
• [At] the higher numbers [the AlphaTRAK numbers] are about 100 higher.

People seem to say that it’s about the trends, but we all have to speak to our skeptical or controlling vets. I may buy an AlphaTRAK just so that I can do the BG curve in numbers she understands. If anyone has an AlphaTRAK / ReliOn comparisons or other PET/Human meter comparisons, please post your numbers here.

Once again, what’s the goal on an AlphaTRAK / Pet Meter? If you have any ideas, please let me know. Thanks!

I know what you mean! On top of having to do conversion every time I'm reading American articles or spreadsheets, the use of human meters confuses me. There are different spreadsheets for human and feline calibrated meters on this site. Maybe comparing them will help?

I went straight for animal meter (with feline calibration). Mostly because every Finnish language source recommended it, but also because it's the same brand that Sulo's vet clinic uses (though I'm not sure if any other brand than Wellion is available around here for animals anyway).

Those comparisons are exactly what I would expect to see. As you observed the numbers are closer at lower levels. On a human meter normal is 50-120 and on a pet meter it's 68-150.

My vet has a lab onsite and when he did my cat's BG, they drew blood like they were going to do a lab test, not use a meter.

The last time the vet did BG, I also got a sample to check my meter. My vet said it was accurate, although my reading was lower than his, but both of ours were really high. I think part of the difference was the stress difference between getting blood drawn by the vet and getting an ear prick by me because I didn't even try to poke him until he calmed down. The cat does not do well at the vet anyway (stress/happiness-wise), and drawing blood is a special kind of torture

The next BG test at the house was back to his normal, so I'm really thinking vet office BG tests are a waste of time for my particular cat :( This last visit, the vet didn't check, but he wrote the cat needed diagnostics after we move. I need to get clarification, so the next vet knows what tests are needed and I have it in writing for the insurance (we're in the illness waiting period).

Thanks! I suspected there was probably a consensus for the pet meters.
