I really hope I didn't jinx myself... Charlie's sugars were doing so well and now his evening reading is at 140. Still too low to shoot but no real clue as to why it would be higher. No change at all to his diet, no stress, no indication he's not feeling well. He may be drinking a bit more than he was but not sure on that either...

Any thoughts?

Don't stress out about one number....cat's (being the wonderfully complex creatures they are) like to keep us guessing, so it's possible that he had an itch, saw a particularly interesting show on TV or just wanted to make your life a little more exciting. Even non-diabetic cats blood glucose is going to fluctuate so unless he stays higher than normal, don't worry about it just yet!

One thing we do suggest is to try feeding a snack at about +9....if his pancreas is working, the little snack can get it producing insulin and bring the Pre-shot numbers down.

Also, try testing again at about +3 on those cycles where his PS is a little high...again, the food you feed then will trigger his pancreas to produce insulin (if it's working) and the +3 will be lower

unfortunately I am not home at +3 and +9 most days. I've been leaving a little food out all day but maybe he ate it early today. He does look pretty healthy so I guess I shouldn't worry too much!

Sometimes, a rest period for the pancreas allows it to recover some function. Reducing the carbohydrate work also keeps the pancreas from being overtaxed.

Also, a cat's physiology allows it to make carbohydrate from protein or fat.

fast question.. can I give him hamburger fat for a snack? We had hamburgers for dinner and I've got the drained fat...

If no seasonings, you could give a tiny bit. If it is an unusual food for him, too much could make him vomit.
Infobit: In cats, fat has 8.5 calories per gram.

nope, no seasonings. How come people can't have a metabolism that only has 8 1/2 calories per gram of fat? no fair....

And that's why you shouldn't let you kitty watch TV. It rots their brains and makes their BG numbers higher. ;) You should make your kitty go out and play instead.

Hahahahahah....that's great!!! Thanks for the laugh!!

They also see those cat food commercials that look so good and then compare to what's in their bowl and give us that "what the heck is THIS stuff" look!

That's why I've been getting those dirty looks from Edwin. It's also probably because that "fancy feast" cat gets served in a crystal bowl instead of a regular plate. That's it, no more TV for Edwin.

you guys are killing me!! I needed the laughs... no kitty TV in this house, I think the original diagnosis of "keeping mommy on her toes" must be it because his a.m. reading was 66..and he's really feeling good. I got my face scrubbed raw this morning.
