I was at Petco looking for a good canned food for my sugar kitty. I found one called BG or Before Grain that is 96% meat, low ash, no veggies, lots of vitamins and supplements. The cat loves it and (maybe a coincidence) but his blood sugar reading was a good deal lower after 2.5 days on the food. Has anyone had any experience with this food? I don't see it on any of the lists anywhere on the board. The web site is here: http://www.merrickpetcare.com/store/det ... 14&s=20473

As a newbie, I'm wondering if this seems like a good canned alternative?

Thanks!

It should be fine, but make sure you look at the ingredients for every can. Merrick also makes /made Before Grain as a supplemental feeding product only, not for regular meals no supplements. I do not know if they are making the supplemental feeding cans now, but they are still on store shelves and.... the cans look exactly the same except for the ingredients and the note saying "for supplemental feeding only, not a complete food"

I actually had to point this out to the usually on the ball staff at the pet supply store I go to, who did not notice that.

It's fine... as long as it is the 96% ones.

Merrick's original Before Grain canned forumals were 100% meat or fish only and were meant only to be a supplement. There was a teeny tiny statement on the labels indicating this but most people don't bother reading labels. Merrick later reformulated the Before Grain canned to be 96% meat or fish with all the necessary vitamins/minerals to be nutritionally complete.

However, you can still find the old 100% supplemental Before Grain canned food in stores... right alongside the 96% ones. The labels look almost exactly alike so read them carefully.

Example of the turkey one:

Thanks for the input! I have the 96% cans that are meals. I didn't know about the supplemental feeding cans, so I'll be sure to really check things carefully.
