I just did the last reading for Bo's BG curve and it was 630. Is there something I should do? Here is what it looked like

PMPS 360
+1 418
+3 236
+5 161
+6 242
+9 630

I did a reading at +6 because his +5 reading was the lowest I had ever gotten, and his nadir isn't normally btwn +6 or +8. Because his +6 was 242, I decide to skip +7 since I figured it wouldn't go into hypo levels.

Do I need to worry? Is there something I should do? His next dose of insulin is at 6AM.

I have also posted this in ProZinc.

TIA!

Pam

He's probably just bouncing from the low he hit at nadir. In the wise words of Kris & Teasel:

Here's how it works:
  1. BG goes low OR lower than usual OR drops too quickly.
  2. Kitty's body panics and thinks there's danger (OMG! My BG is too low!).
  3. Complex physiologic processes take glycogen stored in the liver (I think of it as "bounce fuel"), convert it to glucose and dump it into the bloodstream to counteract the perceived dangerously low BG.
  4. These processes go into overdrive in kitties who are bounce prone and keep the BG propped up varying lengths of time (AKA bouncing).
  5. Bounce prone kitty repeats this until his body learns that healthy low numbers are safe. Some kitties are slow learners.
  6. Too high a dose of insulin can keep them bouncing over and over until the " bounce fuel" runs out and they crash - ie., have a hypo episode. That's why we worry so much about kitties that have had too high a dose prescribed by the vet and the owner isn't home testing or testing enough.
  7. Many vets have little/no understanding of the bouncing phenomenon, often prescribe dose changes that are too large and/or don't encourage home testing.

Might want to remove the 911 for a high number. There isn't really a "take action" for one high number :)

We are at vet. Gave him some fast acting insulin. No Ketones...no UTI! Waiting to do another BG in about 30 minutes. If it is lower, will give him some fluids and take him home.

I read recently one kitty got a 900 BG at the vet. And many of us have experienced a "high" on our human meter which means >600. Staying high all the time is never good, but bounces do happen.

Good to know, Kris, but what does it mean when the numbers are too low? I'm glad to hear your cat is doing well now Pam.

The BG numbers drop too low when the insulin dose is too high. That can cause a kitty to have an episode of hypoglycemia. A bad episode can kill them quickly because it damages the brain.

omg. The vet told me to dose her at 2.5 units on a u-40 syringe. Is that too much? I gave her a much smaller amount this morning and none last night.
