Better early or late than never?

Hi I know that timing and consistency are both important with giving insulin especially basaglar like I'm using. My question is it better to give it a little late or a little early then not at all and if so how late or early? I am a home testing but getting crazy numbers so not sure how accurate.

Well that’s impossible to answer. Do the cats you babysit have spreadsheets? Are you testing? Every cat is different. Usually you can shoot 15 minutes early no problem and 30 minutes once in 24 hours. Shooting late is okay provided the next shot will be 12 hours later. But without knowing the situation with each cat it’s hard to say.

Okay so you shoot late but then you're continually going to be off track If you do your next shot 12 hours later. Yes I'm home testing but not sure it's accurate getting crazy numbers.

Okay. In that case, tell us about your cat. Add a signature with pertinent info. Look at mine. Start a spreadsheet and let us look at the numbers. Then we can help you.

Read the yellow stickies. They are quite helpful.

How do I add a signature? I have a spreadsheet started but not much data yet. Almost 2 year old female cat diagnosed about a month ago. On two units twice a day.

Click on your username at the top and then click on signature. Be sure to include date on dx, food you are feeding, type of meter, link to your spreadsheet, and anything else you feel we need to know. We will help you. I’m glad you are testing and asking questions. She’s so young! I’m going to tag someone who had a young diabetic to help as well. @Marje and Gracie

whats dx? Yes she is so young. :( She has NEVER been overweight either, but did have steroids for allergies before the diagnosis. Anybody that has any knowledge on homecooked diets so I can work with allergies and diabetes would be a plus! Thanks!

When she was diagnosed with diabetes. One of my 3 1/2 year olds have allergies that are driving me crazy. She has dermatitis and eosinophilic granuloma complex. I’ve switched protein several times but it comes back. She’s on a raw diet. This last time I might have fouled up by trying egg yoke for hairballs. What type of allergies does your cat have?

You want her on a low carb canned or raw diet.

Hi, I have only had this cat since Thanksgiving she's a semi rescue so I don't know for sure what allergies she has. We were trying to figure that out before the diabetes came up.

What are the symptoms?

You might want to consider getting a human meter as the test strips are much less expensive.

Steroid usage is what ultimately caused diabetes in my Gracie at 4 years old. She had a chronic interstitial cystitis issue that we used the steroids for and the vet believes the chronic issue probably led to her being pre-diabetic and the steroids pushed her over the edge into FD. Allergies/asthma and steroid use can result in FD. Sometimes, insulin therapy helps to get them into remission.

My vet highly recommends, and I have used for my two cats, Nutriscan to determine any potential issues with foods. It was very easy to do at home and then mail back to them; our pet insurance covered it in full for both cats. My vet and I have consulted with Dr. Dodds over the years regarding thyroid issues in one of our kitties who passed away at 18. She does alot of research and has worked a long time to ensure that Nutriscan is not just another one of “those” allergy tests. In fact, she doesn’t even state it is an allergy test. It is a food sensitivity and intolerance test. For our cats, it identified only fish oil as a sensitivity for the young one and chicken for the older one. Liv had not yet shown any issues with fish oil but we were proactive and switched her to Moxxor green lipped mussel. Tobey, while I can’t say had any consistent issue with chicken, I will say he occasionally had a bit of a softer poo (formed but still soft) and that does not occur since we eliminated chicken.

I use EZ Complete premix with ground, raw proteins and we never feed the same meal twice. I use venison, elk, bison, pork, turkey, lamb, and Liv still gets chicken. I did alot of research before I started using EZ Complete and I really, really like it. Our cats have done excellent with it.

For us to really help you, we need to see a spreadsheet. If you look around at different kitty’s spreadsheets, you’ll see that many of them would also describe their numbers as “crazy”. Cats can go, in one cycle, from +300 to 40 and back to +300. That is not uncommon.

Does she gave any scabs from scratching? Military dermatitis looks like a red crusty rash.

I hope you get that spreadsheet up and running.

Spreadsheet Link should be on my signature. No scabs or crustiness just red where the hair is thin and lighter colored and she's been scratching under her front paws

That’s how my Mocha started. Her hair was thinning above her eyes and then the rash developed there and on her ears. She’s indoor only and no fleas here. I don’t know the cause. I’m going to try the test Marje recommended. I’ve done food trials and she’s good until she’s not.

I’ll look at your ss.

I can read your spreadsheet, though it looks like you might have got it from one of the FB groups. There is a group that copied our spreadsheet, made some changes, and now the changed version doesn't always work. For example, it blows up on my iPad, but works on my Mac.

What you need to do is get our original template and copy the data over. Instructions are here.

Yes, that's the pirated version from one of the other groups.

I turned my link sharing on. try it again?
We appreciate you making a spreadsheet from our templates. The one you linked was, as Chris said, pirated from us, closes whenever we try to open it, and has information that is false and potentially dangerous added by the FB group.
