Best way to board a cat - with a friend or the vet?

Hi everyone,

I've got a bit of a dilemma here... my kitty was diagnosed diabetic on 6/25, and after a disastrous start we're finally taking our first few steps on the road towards managing her care. I'm hometesting with some degree of success, working on changing her diet, and generally keeping her happy while we establish our routine.

The trouble is I'm leaving for a weeklong vacation on the 19th, and I'm not sure what to do with her while I'm gone. My vet offers a boarding option and I know they'd be able to handle her dosing, but she's terrified at the vet and I'm worried that the stress levels will be bad for her health. On the other hand I have a friend that has offered to keep Sasha in her home and has agreed to give her the insulin, but seeing how Sasha has been reacting to her hometests I don't think my friend would be capable of monitoring her.

Would it be better for me to keep her at the vet? Or at my friend's house?

I would vote for your friend as long as she understands what she's getting into. Plus she can lean on this board if she needs help.

A vet isn't a bad option but they probably don't have anyone on staff in the evenings. Would hate for your kitty to be alone if anything should happen.

That's a good point. And I know this girl can be trusted. (not to mention I'm a little short on cash after the hospital bills  )

She may be otj be then - it looks like she is responding well to the insulin. The biggest concern I would have is that Sasha might not eat as much and so without testing she might go too low. What would you think about stopping her insulin while she is at your friend's house? If she goes too high for a week, its better than too low. Just a thought.

You also may have an issue with Sasha hiding or not eating in your friends home because she scared since she is someplace new. Is it possible that she could stay at your house and your friend come over there to feed and give insulin? That is what I do when I have to go out of town.

There are members here who live in NYC. Maybe one of them would be willing to pet sit for you? You can edit your subject to include "NYC area" or something like that. I know of one member who lives in Brooklyn but last I heard she is no longer able to help out local FDMB members.

how about your friend coming to your place and pet sit (even possibly sleep over) - might that be an option, then way sasha can stay home and still get the care she needs.

Highly unlikely anyone will want to stay here, as I haven't got a single piece of furniture! I just bought my first place and haven't yet purchased furniture since the floors need to be done first :) Sasha's the type to love going to a friends house, it's pretty exciting for her and I've done it in the past with great success.

I'm going to find out of the offer from my friend still stands, thanks for the advice!
