Hello, I haven't been here for a long, long time. I was helped here when Teddy had diabetes. He went into remission thanks to the wonderful folks on this board. I lost him in 2012, but not due to diabetes.
Well, to make a long story short, this past summer a feral had 5 kittens and moved them to under our shed. We trapped them, had the mother spayed (she was very wild) and released her. She is doing fine, many people around here feed the ferals. My sister in law took one of the kittens, and I'm keeping one (maybe 2) We took two yesterday to get neutered and spayed. The female is very small and active. They gave us a clear plastic cone e collar and it is not working out very well. I currently have her in a medium size cage because she is running around into everything with the collar. Does anyone know of a small soft collar that would be good? I slept on the floor last night beside the cage and am glad I did. She had brought her leg up through the neck part somehow. Also, how long do you think she needs to wear one? They said 7-10 days!! I will be in traction by then.
By the way....anyone looking to adopt ??
 
We tried to use a collar on our Molly, but she was a Houdini. She kept wedging herself (purposefully I think) into tight places and then backing out to pop the collar off! Instead we ended up using a preemie onesie, which we were able to cut a little trap door out of the bottom so that she could do her business. I think that there is a brand of outfit that is specifically made for covering wounds or stitches, but it's probably too late for you to order one of those, whereas you could pick up a onesie almost anywhere for a few bucks to try it.

I think the timing is dependent on the cat. We had a girl spayed many years ago, and she just did not care about the stitches at all and totally left them alone. But Molly was picking on them, so we did leave her in the onesie until the stitches came out, but only when she was not 100% supervised.

This sounds so cute. Did you take any pictures?? :)

I guess I have been fortunate because none of my cats have had to wear a cone or anything when they were spayed or neutered.

In case something looks odd, Molly doesn't have a tail, she only has about two vertebrae that just makes it look like a nub.

You can kind of see how the entire band around the leg hole is still there, but then I totally cut a square out that went from right over her nub to just barely below her "bathing suit parts". If she actually had a full tail, I don't know if it would be better to cut out a separate hole for the tail which would help hold it all in place, and then a separate square for using the potty. I basically put it on her first (easier without a tail) and then used a marker to sketch where I wanted to cut.
 
Vets can also order onesies that are made for cats so they fit a bit better than the baby onesies. Just another idea in case the baby onesie isn't comfy for her. I also have a soft blue cone from the vet that one of my cats has had to wear for a while & he doesn't mind it at all.
 
Thank you all for the replies! I tried a onsie on her, and it wasn't bad getting it on, but she rolled on her side and started shivering. She was really scared of it. I ordered a Kong EZ soft (thanks Chris & China). In the meantime I googled you tube videos and found one where they used a paper plate. I know sounds wonky, but she is doing a lot better than she did with the plastic one from the vet. She is just a little thing and I was able to cut it down a bit to fit her better. I think it will do until the other one gets here. Guess I'm sleeping on the floor again tonight.....
 
Oh poor baby! Sorry, I really never knew it could be so traumatic, Molly didn't mind hers at all.

Glad you found something that is working. She'll be healed soon enough.
