Hello,
Nudi has very bad arthritis and possibly pancreatitis. He had mild pancreatitis in August but he was just tested again now and it said he does NOT have it but his liver IS enlarged per X-ray and ultrasound and he was tested with the snap this time so I just don't know. Anyway, I'm looking to put him on pain meds to help him feel better. I'm not a big fan of meds but feel like at this point its needed for him.

The vet offered these options, liquid Buprenex (I originally tried him on .2, I can't remember if the vet gave him a shot or if he did the liquid in his cheek, I think the cheek) but it was too much he was loopy and eyes were dilated it didn't seem like it helped) so I can try this again at .1 or lower or the vet offered Gabapentin or injectable Adequan she said it's labeled for dogs but that it's also used in cats. Does anyone have any opinions on which to take?

Hopefully if he's on the meds he'll not only feel better but his sugar levels will go down too they have been in the mid 200's (he's been off insulin since this past July).

Also I'm assuming he'll have to be on pain meds for life to help with his arthritis and possible pancreatitis?

Once more thing, when I asked the vet about anti-inflammatories to help Nudi's arthritis she was adamant that she would not give to him because the side effects were so bad.

Thank you for any information that is available! I'm hoping to give him the meds soon to ease his pain.

The difficulty with pancreatitis is that you need to get a test when the flare is active. There are points when you may not get a significant reading on an fPLi because a flare is starting or ending. This is a Primer on Pancreatitis that a member here developed. It may be helpful.

Many of us have used buprenorphine for pain management with pancreatitis. You may need to adjust the dose if your kitty was loopy. I don't know about gabapentin for arthritis. It's typically used for nerve pain and arthritis doesn't fall into that category. However, it may be worth a try. I've not heard about it's being used for pancreatitis. There are any number of people who have used Adequan for arthritis.

The use of anti-inflammatories (i.e., NSAIDS) is controversial. Several years ago, the FDA issued a black box warning for the use of meloxicam (Metacam) in cats. It can cause acute renal failure. NSAIDS have been used in other countries. Apparently, the dosing ranges recommended in the US are higher than elsewhere.

i don’t know about pancreatitis but, for arthritis/joint pain support for my old man cat, i give him 5mg (started with 10mg till it started helping him) of the same full spectrum cbd oil that i also use for myself. and he gets 1 hartz joint chew as a treat every day.. he hasn’t limp around for quiet awhile so it must help..

I would stick with the Buprenex for pancreatitis but reduce dose from the 0.2ml. For joint problems I would go with Dasuquin , gabapentin and Adequan. I am using those for my civi Moxie.
