Best lancet for paw pads

I use a 2 gauge lancet that comes with the alph track meter to test my cat's paws. Should I try to use the paw she doesn't walk on? I am new to testing?o

Is it Ok to use paw pads if you check them.

Any help would be appreciated.

I never used the pad but I know some ppl here do. I think they go higher up so it helps w/ infections due to the litter box issue.

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anyone uses human lancet device like the Accu Check on cats to prick a cat's paws. i am looking for the easiest way for my cat. my cat doesn't like it and has been getting more nervous. The lancet device for my Alpha track meter doesn't work. I use the lancet alone but you need to put a good deal of pressure to get enough blood.

The original device I had, I could not get to work even on the highest setting. The meter was free but the strips were too high for me to buy. I finally bought the relion meter w/ device and it worked perfectly. Probably more me not doing it right! lol
But I did have better results. I test on the ear though, so I don't know if that makes a difference. I could not do that free hand thing! eeeeks - scared me to poke to hard... I am a huge chicken.

Paw pads tend to be much thicker than ears, so I would think the larger gauge lancet would work better. 25-28 gauge. Usually labeled for alternate site testing.

Have you adjusted the depth setting on your lancing pen? They usually have 5 settings and you'll need to adjust to see which one works best for your situation.

If you are free-handing the lancet, go in at a 45 degree angle, bevel up on the lancet. It makes it easier to poke if the bevel is up, but darn that tiny shiny spot is hard to see for aging eyes. ohmygod_smile
