Hello everybody, I have a 13 yr old diabetic cat who has been on Lantus for 5 months now. His blood glucose was 480 today. What is the best food to put him on as I am feeding FF classics and Friskies pate. I try and test his bg daily but have to do it in his ears and I kno that hurts him. Can you plz help me??? I am so new to all this and just want the best for Bugs. Thank you!

It sounds like you are feeding the right foods. You want to try to stay under 10% carbs.

Cats don't have a lot of nerve endings in the ears, and if you give him a treat and some lovings every single time you test, whether successful or not, he should learn to associate testing time with good stuff.

We would ask that you test at the very very least before giving insulin at each shot, and if he ever has a number that you are unsure of, then post here and ask questions about whether you should shoot or not, and what dose to give.
To help you with the dosing, we would want to see some mid-cycle tests too, like around +6 (six hours after you gave the shot).

When you have a chance, can you please set up a spreadsheet, if you haven't already done so? That way we can see how your kitty is reacting to the insulin and help you to help your kitty.

-You are feeding what is right. You want a low carb (10% or less of calories from carbs). For a complete listing see:
http://catinfo.org/docs/FoodChartPublic9-22-12.pdf
- How much insulin are you giving and are you giving it twice a day?
- When was the 480 obtained with respect to giving insulin?
Do yo have any other BG values like before shots and like every two hours (a curve) to see how low the cat goes. You dose to keep the low above about 70 or so.

And welcome.

Both Fancy Feast Classics and Friskies Pate is fine for a diabetic kitty to eat. In fact Friskies pates are what my gang here eats and my one guy Maxwell has been in remission for 2 years while on it, and my other diabetic girl is trying I think to go that way as well. So it mostly likely isn't Bugs' diet that it a problem and keeping his BGs high.

Also if you are poking on the very edge of his ear, testing him at home shouldn't be hurting him either. If you look at Autumn's spreadsheet in my signature you will see all the tests I do on her in a day.

We would love to help you figure out what is going on with Bugs and get him feeling the best he can be and even possibly into remission and off insulin altogether but we will need a little more information

Such as how much Lantus are you giving him? And how often. As far as home testing you really need to get more than one test a day, at the very least before each shot and another one about half-way inbetween around 6 hours after his shot. Since Lantus is dosed off the nadir (the lowest point in the cycle), not the preshot values.

I tested his blood before I gave him a shot, he gets 3units of lantus twice a day. I don't know how to post replys to everyones questions yet but I hope this helps. I will keep a log and somehow post on here to see wen to shoot and wen not to. I thank you all for the help. I love this boy so much and want a lot more years with him... :-D

I just took Bug's BG this morning before shot he was at 407 so I gave him 3 units, will test blood again in 6 hours to see. I don't know how to update my profile or add a pic so if anyone can help it would be great. thank you.

Jenn and Bugs....

Just set up a spread sheet please take a look and let me kno what I am doing wrong...Thank you much!!
