Hello,
I have a 17 lb. male cat just diagnosed with diabetes. He is living at the home of a senior man down the road from me as he fights with all my cats. I am responsible for all financial affairs regarding "Dewey." I am a firm believer in feeding cats healthy food. My cats currently eat Royal Canin dry and Wellness wet. Any suggestions of the best direction to take as far as his food now that I've found out that "Dewey" is diabetic?
Thank you,
Abbyfreya

Hi Abby,
Welcome to FDMB! I have converted both of my cats, one diabetic, one not, to Fancy Feast Classic. It wasn't an overnight welcome and there was a little bit of pouting but as of Sunday they both are now eating well without the dried. I do not give treats anymore. I tried a couple of different ones and they didnt like them so I give regular chicken, real fried bacon pieces (in moderation) etc. Nothing with fillers such as hotdogs.

A lot of people here give FF but there is a great list of foods at http://binkyspage.tripod.com/canfood.html

and treats http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopi ... =14&t=9172

You will meet many great people here who are going thru or have gone thru what you are. They are extremely supportive! There's also a lot of information on the FD site and it will take time to consume it all so dont be afraid to ask questions if you need help.

Good luck on getting Dewey going in the right direction :0)

Welcome :)

The best food is low carb canned food  Or raw, which some people here do feed. Buy whatever commerical brand your cat likes to eat and you can afford and can find in the local stores. Fancy Feast is a hit with most cats. Higher end brands like Wellness and EVO are good. Use these charts to find a low carb food:

Just look at the column for carbs and choose foods that have a number 10 or less. Limit seafood/fish to once in awhile meals. Stay away from gravy foods and pouched foods because they are usually too high in carbs for a diabetic. But do keep a few cans of gravy foods (over 18% carbs on the charts) to use in case your cat becomes hypoglycemic. The high carbs will raise blood glucose levels. The Fancy Feast gravy foods work well.

Wellnes is a good brand of food. Most of the canned varieties are grain free and low in carbs.

Hi Abby,

The key (you may already know this) is low carbs. When you look at those canned food lists (look at both the old and the new), pay attention to the "% calories from carbs" column. There are high end and low end brands listed, but you want to find one or more that has "7%" or less, ideally in the carbs column. The wellness you use now might be one of those. You won't find any dry that is really low. Most kitties here get only canned or raw diets.

Welcome to the board. Ask any question you can think of, and somebody here will likely be able to give you an answer. It's an incredible place.

Carl
