Hi everyone,

Curious as to recommendations for food for my civie. She's one of those girls who just is not big on wet food--although she's getting a little of Fay's Friskies now and then. Her crunchies are currently PetSmart's Authority (I know, I know...but we were on Purina One for ages. Apparently this is a minor upgrade).

Part of me says, she's not diabetic, don't worry about it. Part of me says, be proactive and avoid this hassle with a 2nd cat. [It also appears several of you have had multiple diabetic cats (!!!)]

Thoughts either way? I'd really like to keep cost reasonable.

PS - With Fay, we're going up to 5 units tonight. Hope this isn't a mistake, but it is per TR protocol. I do feel like overall, numbers and clinical signs are going down. Unless it's my imagination (very possible).

Thanks to you all <3

For your civvies, if you really, really want to feed dry food, there is Evo Cat and Kitten, Young Again 0 Carb (internet only), and Epigen 90 (?) dry foods as low carb options.

Preventing the problems from poor food is much less costly, in terms of money and anguish, than coping with and paying for the medical problems. I've lost several cats to renal disease and its pretty awful to watch your friend slowly die from uremia, then have to take them to the vet and be euthanized because it isn't a pleasant way to die being poisoned from within.

Thanks @BJM -- what are your thoughts on renal disease related to a low-carb/high protein diet? I do have some concerns that most of the low carb diets are, by nature, higher in protein...which is not great for those kidneys! :-/

I asked this in another thread too, but I really want an answer if possible - the shopping part of the Young Again site has apparently been down for maintenance for over a week. How can anyone purchase the food??

I too worry about such a high protein content (55%).

Friskies Special Diet are low phosphorus and low carb. Keeping the phosphorus down helps the renal cat.
See Feline CRF for more details.
