Sophia will only eat the FF that I have given her for her diabetes/she is diet controlled. She also has hyper-t and now it turns out that she has kidney failure too. The vet gave me a few samples for kidney food but she hates every single one and I think it is better to have her eat something so I keep feeding her FF which can't be good for her kidneys. I would like to give her half FF and half of a good kidney food. Can somebody help? Thank you.

phosphorus is what you want to reduce for kidney issues. The problem with FF it's way too high in phosphorus - all of them. If you refer to Binky's chart you want anything under 250 phosphorus.

If you want to stick with the FF style of food - change over to Friskies Special Diet - remember don't get the chicken and gravy as it's high carb. The turkey/giblets, beef & liver are two low carb low phosphorus varieties.

These are the two flavors I use to treat the same issues with my cats.

Thanks so much. It looks like Friskies food has both low carb and low phosporus in the 2 you mentioned.... Hopefully she will like it..... I think I have spoiled her too much..

I know from experience that Merrick BG Turkey and Blue Wilderness Duck are also both very low in phosphorus. They are definitely more expensive, but I find that Willie eats less of them because the water content is much lower, which definitely decreases the price differential.

You should also discuss with your vet whether or not you cat might benefit from a phosphorus binder added to her food. Aluminum hydroxide gel powder is a commonly used one and it works by binding the phosphorus and preventing the body from absorbing it. See more information here on Tanya's CRF site.
