Hi, friends! So my almost 17-yr-old boy has chronic kidney disease AND diabetes. His CKD was well-regulated before the diabetes diagnosis, but his kidneys are now getting worse with the high-protein diabetic diet. His phosphorus levels are actually okay. It's his creatinine and BUN that are too high. Does anyone here have experience with this dreadful mash-up of diseases? What diet worked best for your kitty? Thanks!

What stage CRD is your boy?
Unless he is fairly advanced with CRD , it is OK to feed high protein food.
My Sheba had early CRD and I gave her home prepared food.
Here is the link to how I fed her.

Do you feed low phosphorus foods.?
Here is a link to low phosphorus foods

I also added a cooked egg WHITE to her food each day....mashed up and mixed with the other food. It has virtually no phosphorus but is a great source of protein.

If you stick to a low carb, high protein diet that is low in phosphorus with some added egg white that should be ok for both the FD and CRD

Are you giving sub q's?
No. He had a hx of crystals and blockage. I need to figure out his kidney status. I was going on assumption that hx of crystals and needing surgery qualified for low phos diet. I need to follow up with vet in this.

Ferg is getting fed:
Sheba perfect portion pate 42P/56F/3C/236Phos/42cal x2
and
I and love and you, Wholey cow
34P/63F/3C/140Phos/95cal
and occasionally cause it is brothy and he likes it and I already bought it
Fancy Feast Naturals
75P/25F/0C/315Phos/45cal

I wrote out all the low phone low carb ones and will look for options to have today. I also looked for low phos high carb to have a can or two for hypo if we ever get there. I will start adding egg whit to one meal to see if he digs that.

As of today, I weeded out the cans I got based on protien and separated out the higher phos. I will give those to my other cat. He needs a bit of weight loss and was a dry food kitty. So change to wet is protective and proactive. He will get the friskies pates I have and probably stay on those. They are lower phos at around 320-335Phos.

Thank you so much for advice. I plan to give him a rest after a +6 BS today. He really doesn't like the ear pokes. He is so good with his shots I don't want him to get an aversion prior to needing tighter control later. I am fed doing the start low go slow. I am a little bummed tho seeing that TR seems to lead to remission. I understand taking the stress of the insulin making cells quicker helps them heal and leads to higher chances of remission but this is what I can do. Well that and love him and pray.

This board is saving him thank you all. My vet was very "do one unit and see you in 2 weeks." I am glad I checked and up'ed him. We will cal the vet tomorrow to get another urine culture to see if that is gone to eliminate high BS based on illness. I can talk about CKD with them then to clarify his crystal situation. I really need to get his BS I der control so he can get his PU fixed. He has to have a wide open "pee hole", Ya know. This two lil holes, he currently has (although bigger than unaltered cats) isn't optimal.
Have a great mothers day.

Sub q's will bring that bun down. Do you have a copy of the labs?
