Hi,

I know y'all have busy schedules, but if you have a spare moment please send some positive vibes Bertie's way...

He was coughing/gagging this morning periodically and unable to eat anything (despite his best efforts (because he likes his food!)). It seemed to me that he had something stuck in his throat. And I did find some clear puke that had some straw-like stuff in it (not entirely sure whether this is from Bert or one of the Civvies...).

Anyway, he is currently at the vets and will probably - as I write this - be under anaesthesia while they try to remove whatever is in his throat.

I'm sure Bertie would appreciate any positive thoughts. And so would I.... :cry:

Aw, thanks, BJM,

Just had a call from the vet nurse saying they're shortly going to check him over again and review the situation before putting him under anaesthesia. Given his age they don't want to put him through any unnecessary procudures.... So, I'm just waiting to hear from them, and biting (what's left of) my fingernails! nailbite_smile

Prayers on there way for Bertie that he will soon be back to gobbling his noms again and whatever is in his throat is easy for his doctor's to remove.

Also calming vibes to you, I know how worrisome it is whenever one of our babies needs to go under the knife.

UPDATE...

Thanks for the kind wishes, folks.

The vet decided to hold off on the anaesthesia and just monitor Bertie throughout the day to see if the coughing stopped on it's own, which it seems to have done....(Phew!). I have no doubt that this is entirely due to FDMB people sending positive thoughts! ;-) :lol:

They'd like to continue to monitor him until the clinic closes later this evening, then we'll bring him home... I am really hoping he will be able to eat OK (without gagging).... Fingers crossed.....

(((((Eliz))))) - hoping that by the time you get this, Bertie will be back home and chomping on something tasty. As I said in my email, something similar happened to my Tom many years ago and it turned out to be just a furball that he couldn't quite cough up. I had called the vet and was just getting his basket out when he gave a huge cough and out came whatever it was that he'd been gagging on (in his case, a long piece of grass).

Hmmm...

Well, Bertie is back from the vets... But as soon as he started to eat he started coughing and gagging again... I can still hear him as I type this...

I did manage to check his BG and it was really high, so I've given him just a token dose of insulin so that he has something in his system.

If he isn't any better by morning then I guess we'll be back at the vets again...

Here's hoping he improves very soon. And I send out the same wish to all other cats and indeed to all suffering creatures everywhere: "May you be happy. May you be healthy. May you be free from suffering."

You might make the food very soupy to see if that helps him eat it.

Ack! C'mon Bertie hack it up! Hopefully that's all it is. How worrisome! Sending anti-hacking vines and positive thoughts your way. Let's get this little issue resolved quickly, eh?

UPDATE...

Well... Bertie didn't cough it up... And he made a lot of efforts to do so thoughout the night (poor little chap....) He sleeps snuggled up next to me in the bed so I could feel every one of those coughs....

So, he's back at the vets today and they'll anaesthetise him shortly and then try to find and remove the obstruction...

Take heart from what the vet said, Eliz - he sounded reassuring, didn't he...

My little Sapphire sleeps snuggled up next to me in my bed too! I'm sure all of our little furry babies are sending Bertie get well wishes...

UPDATE...

Bertie is fine! dancing_cat

The vet removed a piece of tough grass from behind his soft palate. Phew!

Bertie also had some blood tests done and the vet said he was impressed by how good the results were. Even his blood glucose was good apparently! The vet was quite puzzled by that one...

Will collect him in a couple of hours. It will be SO good to have him home. cat_pet_icon

Woohoo glad to here that Bertie is fine now and will soon be gobbling up his noms again!

I also have a Bertie he is a big blue point siamese mix ...it must be something in the name..lol Our Bertie a few years ago came strolling in the computer room bleeding from the mouth and cause me to nearly faint at all the blood pouring from his mouth, rushed him to the vet only to find out that he had gotten a paper cut under his tongue. (he's a pica boy) ohmygod_smile What is it about Berties that they have to go chew on things they shouldn't? :roll:

So glad to hear that Bertie is doing okay today. These furbabies, sure do give us the scares sometimes! Hope he will not be eating anymore of that kind of grassy stuff. Take care!

Good to hear Elizabeth that Bertie has made it through and I sure he is a little upset with himself from distressing you....but all good now I hope. A peice of grass, not even a fish bone, I guess cats should be leaving the grassy fields to the cows. Good to hear Bertie is back on all fours ;-)

Whew... from over here, too! Feel the big sigh of relief?

Myrtle developed a cough not long after I got her and it had the vet quite puzzled. She was scheduled to have anesthesia to look down her throat... when she came right and never coughed again. But after she came home I listened out for a cough for some time.

Glad to hear Bertie is well and you are at peace once more!
 
Aw, shucks, fellas... I am SO touched by your kindness. And Bertie would be too - if he could read! ;-) :lol:
