It was 9 years ago this week that Bertie was diagnosed with diabetes, and that we joined FDMB.

I am so very grateful for the advice, support and friendship of the people on this forum (past and present), and to Rebecca for having started this amazing community.

Bertie started out as a very tricky diabetic, and was in high blood glucose numbers for a long, long while. (I thought we were a hopeless case.) But time - and a serendipitous change of insulin - worked a kind of magic and his numbers got better over time.

Despite being a diabetic on insulin for 9 years Bertie has had a wonderful happy life. I do not think the diabetes has impaired his quality of life at all.
At 17 I don't know how much longer I'll have with him (he's still not entirely over a virus he contracted at Christmas). But I am immensely grateful to FDMB for all the time Bertie and I have had together. We would never have made it to this point without you!

:bighug::bighug::bighug:THANK YOU, EVERYONE! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

With love,
Eliz & Bertie xxx

Yay! Go Bertie! Go Eliz!
Dear Eliz, you have done and are still doing the most phenomenal job. I know you've had your ups and downs but you have never wavered in your love and devotion for Bertie... At the same time as making time for the other kitties in your care, looking after DH, yourself, and your friends both real and 'virtual'... I am so happy to call you a very dear friend and I hope we will always be in each other's lives.
Sending much love and huge hugs, and looking forward to a celebratory glass of something nice very soon

Congratulations, Eliz and Bertie!!! How wonderful that it's been 9 years of health and happiness, and wishing you many more!!! MrWorfmen's Mom is right, it is a real testament to the love and care you give, and you are most definitely an inspiration to everyone here! Hugs and scritches,

Lucy :bighug: :cat: :bighug: :cat: :bighug: :cat:

Hi Eliz,

Glad you like it. I hope Bertie approves.

I'm very glad that you posted here to celebrate Bertie's anniversary, firstly because it's such wonderful news, but secondly because success stories like Bertie's are so important to share.

Not every cat will achieve diabetic remission and I imagine that there may be readers of this forum whose kitties are insulin-dependent and who may get disheartened at times when they see other cats achieving remission. It is both inspiring and uplifting to know that remission isn't necessary for a diabetic kitty to lead a long, full and happy life! :D

17 years old. 9 years on insulin. Wow.
He should be used as a case study for other vets, Eliz! Especially our recalcitrant vets of the UK.
You have done an incredible job here. Both you & Bertie.
Imagine how many other kittehs & their hoomins that have a longer, happier life because of you two!

Much love & anniversary tickles & brrrrraaaows from Milo & me.
