hello,

my kitty has diabetes for a few yr now and is on Lantus. But now has kidney failure 3rd stage.
Vet thinks she has proteinuria, so started her on benazapril. just reading on tanya's kidney site:
Anecdotal evidence suggests that diabetic cats with CKD may do less well on benazepril (Fortekor) than cats with CKD only.

has anyone seen this or know if its still true and up to date. I cant seem to find anything online about this.
She doesnt go into detail about it. concerned my kitty is on the wrong medication.

hope to hear back thank you

debbie

You may want to post on the main health forum. Will be interested in seeing the replys. Since Gizmo has both also. Maybe tag Marje - she has a wealth of knowledge on this.

hi there, i put this on the main forum yesterday. didnt hear from anyone so posted it here .

yes. i am for a few years. it was because of you all my kitty went into remission. but she unfortunately has CRF now so back on insulin but a tiny dose.

Cant seem to find anything against benazapril for diabetic cats quite yet. But did found that a Gary D. Norsworthy, DVM Diplomate, ABVP (Feline) Alamo Feline Health Center San Antonio, Texas: says he uses benazapril as a go to drug for almost kidney insufficency patients because it help slow down the kidney failure and also *****uses it for an appetite stimulent*** that's very interesting and a good thing.

Marje is away on vacation right now so you probably won't hear back from her for a while.

Trixie has been on Benazepril for over 3 years now - she was on insulin when she started on it. It's hard to say since she's on so many meds and has a lot going on, but in general I'm inclined to say she hasn't had any issue with being on it.

well thats ok...when she gets back will be fine. Glad shes doing fine in it. what is she taking it for?

She takes it for both her high BP (along with amlodipine) and her very crappy kidneys (she's probably considered Stage IV at this point - she's been between Stage III and Stage IV for 3 years....happened out of the blue).

thats great she sounds like shes doing awesome. Its making my kitty nauseous and she vomited last night. rough time becasuse she had just had her insulin prior to teh vomiting.. honey on her gums every hr till her sugar went up to save number.. shes a little better today, but i havetn given her the benazapril yet. hoping she doesnt get sick again tonight. if so may have to stop. Di your kitty experience any nausea or vomiting in the begininng.

Neko was on benazapril or Fortekor for a couple of years, and it really helped control her proteinuria. Did your vet run a urine protein/creatinine ratio test?

Are you in Canada? I have some unused Fortekor to give away.

Trix was in the midst of a very nasty bout with pancreatitis when she first started benazepril so unfortunately I don't know if the med initially disagreed with her or if it was the p-titis talking...

My non diabetic was on Benazapril and it helped, but please also get her blood pressure checked as high BP and protienuria go hand in hand. For the high BP my Boy was on amlodipine

My Neko did not have high blood pressure with her proteinuria. However, high BP can be one of the causes of proteinuria, so should be checked in case those meds should be started too.
