CKD Cats should get as much fluid from their diet and drinking water as they can for as long as they can keep up. That’s the best source of hydration. I’m sure you are already adding water to all his food. If it’s not soupy, I’d see if he will eat it with a little more. With a creatinine of 2.2, even giving fluids EOD is not warranted unless he is vomiting or has diarrhea.
Here is more info on
oral hydration.
Giving fluids too soon can potentially cause overhydration. Fluids are not just water. If you give Normosol, it has high levels of sodium (and it stings). LRS has potassium which is good for a CKD cat whose potassium is in the lower range of normal. Giving fluids can help with dehydration but they can also put some stress on the kidneys.
I don’t know if Joybee linked the page on
subq fluids but it has a lot of great info to help you especially if you want to discuss it with your vet.
With my three CKD cats and one PKD cat, I didn’t start fluids until their creatinine was over 3.5 and then we did daily fluids. Gus was on daily fluids for four years for CKD before we helped him transition due to lymphoma. The other two were on daily fluids less time but also crossed from other than CKD.
