Here is your new thread

hi everyone i am new to this whole thing but i just discovered by cat is diabetic. I brought him to the vet in the summer because he lost tons of weight all of a sudden. she gave him some worm pills and nothing happening and we got a huge vet bill. So i started to research and took a reading of his blood today and it came out to be 24.3 mmol/L! Now what do i do? i really want to limit going to the vet because it seems to never work for my family.

Congrats on home testing! It may be that he needs insulin; that number is pretty high.

But first, what is your cat eating? Wet low carb is the best for diabetic cats and may lower his numbers dramatically

thanku!
well I've done my research and i switched him to wet cat food right away. I'm feeding him 1 can a day.. half in the morning and half in the evening. but i did the reading when he was on wet cat food so does that mean he has to be on insulin?
I've read somewhere about a glucose curve? do i have to make one to see how much insulin he needs?

Which wet food are you giving? Being canned is not enough.

Cat Info explains the benefits of low carb canned or raw food and has a food list here.

That is a diabetic number. If he were mine, I would start insulin. We suggest one of three kinds: Lantus, Levemir or proZinc. They are not the least expensive, but they are mildest and longest lasting and easiest to regulate with.

They should be prescribed by a vet, so you have support going forward. I'd make sure the vet is familiar with one of the insulins and won't want to prescribe older, harsher insulins like Humulin, Canninsulin or Vetsulin, so maybe call first. Are you in Canada? If so, Lantus and Levemir should be less expensive as they are human insulins used successfully in felines. You can buy a pen and use a syringe. (if you decide to go with one of the L insulins, check out the stickies on their forum first to get info on buying and using. ProZinc is only bought through a vet so may be more expensive in Canada.)

If you are in the UK, they always prescribe Canninsulin first and you have to prove it won't work before you can get another insulin. There is a study In England (not sure where but we can find out for you )that is funding cats on PZI.

yes i am from Canada
we have a appointment booked with the vet on friday so they can prescribe us some insulin
thanku for your help
