Bee Sting!

Hi, My Saatz got stung by a massive bee. His paw and first part of his front leg is swollen at least double the size of his other paw. I just called the emergency vet that partners with my regular vet and explained that what happened and that we have no money at all until next payday, which is a week form Thursday. She told me signs to watch for in case he is having an allergic reaction. I think my regular vet may be willing to see me in the morning if he is will be OK that long. Does anyone have any experience with bee stings and cats? Anybody know anything I can do to bring the swelling down till morning? Any advice about this at all? He is acting normal right now, just ate even, he just keeps licking at his leg, but I am pretty panicked right now. I can tell it hurts him pretty bad. I think the sting is on the inside of his wrist, but he wont really let me look.

my late Kitty did this twice in her younger years, once she got it in the lip and once in her foot. the first time, in the lip, i called the vet's and they said she could go into shock and was telling me the symptoms to watch for and while they were, she started showing them so we rushed to the vet. i think they gave her a steroid shot and she was fine pretty quickly.

the second time around, i didn't wait, i just went and she got the shot again.

after that she learned her lesson

(eta: just wanted to clarify that i didn't wait the second time just cause i figured she was prone to the shock thing. and the first time, she started getting lethargic pretty quickly, i want to say within 15-20 minutes if i remember correctly but that was nearly 20 years ago too)

Cindy, how quickly did your Kitty exhibit signs of trouble that first time? When I got downstairs his paw was already huge and its been at least half an hour since. He seems OK, except for the swelling, and it seems itchy and painful, but he is alert and breathing is fine.

i wanna say she started getting lethargic within 15-20 minutes and was having trouble standing up. fortunately the vet was about 45 seconds away back then. keep in mind also that she was stung right in the lip that first time around.

ok, well we know it has been at least half an hour since the bee got him. The leg is bothering him, but everything else seems OK, he is still breathing just fine and responds like normal when I call to him. I am so much calmer now, thank you for your quick help. I will keep a close eye on him all night, but I think he will be just fine till morning. Thank you so much!!

Both Oreo and my GA Velcro got stung by yellow jackets they were investigating. Paws swelled up quite a bit. Oreo wouldn't let us near her paw, but Velcro did. We took some ice in a ziploc and wrapped in a washcloth and held it on his paw as long as he would let us. That seemed to help.

Keep an eye on him and see if you can apply some ice to help the swelling.

He let me do the ice thing for all of 5 mins, he wont let me near him with it anymore. He still seems ok, cept for the swelling, and he keeps walking all around the room, trying to find a place to lay. He can't get comfortable anywhere, poor baby. Is there anything I can give him for the pain till morning? anything that OTC and safe for cats?

Benadryl may help with the sweeling as well as the itchies, but I don't remember the dosage maybe someone else can chime in with the dosage for kitties. It will make him sleepy.

OK, I was able to find some children's Benadryl without Tylenol, but when I called the emergency vet to ask about dosing she said they can't tell me over the phone. Anyone know what is safe to give at all? I just want to make him more comfortable till I can call my vet in the morning, I feel so very bad for the little guy.

Try to do ice again, be sure it's covered with washcloth or something. Infant benedryl should have a weight chart, if not go with lowest dose. The vet here had a fit when I dosed Maisey with something Grandson was given for pain after hernia surgery as an infant. I told them if they had been willing to give me something, as I had pleaded for 3 times that evening I wouldn't have resorted to doing something on my own. Maisey is supper skiddery, and the cone to keep her from the surgery site was flippping her out.

Hey guys, thanks for all the info and help. I ended up giving him just a few drops last night around midnight after looking up more dosing info in the interwebs, and then once he got really drowsy we curled up and fell asleep. He seemed to sleep well, I though, was up every few hours checking on him to make sure the Benedryl was not having any side effects. This morning the swelling was way down, he no longer favors the stung leg, and he does not act like it is bothering him at all. Thank you guys again, I cannot tell you all how lucky I feel to have found you guys!!

I did give her a ring, I am just waiting to hear back form her office as she is out to lunch. I should have called earlier, but I was just so tired after last night. Also, I have to remember to buy a card, I just found out my vet tech, Jessica, is at the hospital right now having her baby!! I am so excited for her!!
