Good morning friends. ~O) ~O)

I'm major upset this morning & I don't know where to begin...

I had to leave on the 17th for a family emergency & a neighbor who is a nurse promised to take care of the kitties while I was gone. She said she would test Bee & dose her at a safe .5 every 12 hours & alert me to any big variance in her reads. Now I know she was the WRONG person to trust!! She "couldn't" get my very compliant girl to cooperate for her tests & dosed "about"every 12 hours!!! She didn't keep a log of Bee's readings or dose amounts or times.

I'm totally devastated & I have no idea where to go from here. She's at 249 now, but at +what??? I can't stop crying.

Please don't beat me up this morning, but I could sure use some advice.

Re: Bee 3/21 need major help please!!

Hi Nancy,
take a deep breath, you need to calm yourself down, ok?

what do you mean by +what? Are you not at your normal AMPS time?

Re: Bee 3/21 need major help please!!

((((((((((((nancy)))))))))))))))
That just stinks!

Can you look on the meter, if she tested, and see what time the last test was?

An early wake up call for the neighbor may be called for as well this a.m.

It will all work out, but it may be hard at first as things sort itself out. Most important is that bee is safe, right!

Re: Bee 3/21 need major help please!!

Trying to breathe Ronnie.

She said she gave Bee her shot at @ 10pm, but I don't believe anything she says now. I don't know what Bee's read was or has been. I feel like I'm dealing with a newly diagnosed kitty again. How could I let this happen!

Re: Bee 3/21 need major help please!!

oh dear

I'd like others input on this, but if this were me, I'd skip this mornings shot - NOT knowing exactly when the last dose was, NOT trusting what bad pet sitter says, you know?

anyone else?

Re: Bee 3/21 need major help please!!

Oh man, that's my biggest fear. We have to go out of town in May sometime for several days to attend my oldest son's graduation from Basic Training. Now that I'm getting Tugger under control, this could be a "thing." I have a great pet sitter and she is comfortable giving injections, we did it at Christmas when we went to CT for a few days. But we weren't testing regularly and he was on one unit and still eating dry food so his numbers were way up there. I only worried then that she'd be on time for his shot. This time around will be a whole different story. I've had one terrible experience with a so-called friend who was supposed to stay in my home and care for my babies for 10 days. We'll just say she did not and my Great Dane is still dealing with the trauma of that two years later. My pet sitter now though, she is pretty awesome. She'll spend some time coming over to learn how to test and what to do before we leave and she stays in constant contact while we're away, so I feel a LOT better about leaving my kids in her care. Plus, she lives right up the street so she can come in at odd times to check on things.

I don't know how to advise you and I sure won't beat you up, but if you'll take virtual {{{Hugs}}} from a stranger...

Re: Bee 3/21 need major help please!!

Is your shot time 10/10? Try getting a +11. No meter reading w/a time? She didnt test?
Of course you know your options (tho it does not help the frustration you feel, Im sure).
Skip a.m. shot
Give regular dose at regular time
Give bcs at regular time.
Any others??

What do you think is best, Nancy?

Re: Bee 3/21 need major help please!!

I don't have much advice to give...I agree with Ronnie but I'm not experienced enough.
I'm sorry this happened.

Re: Bee 3/21 need major help please!!

sorry nancy,
we posted at the same time...no need to repeat your answer.
I would probably do what Ronnie's option. And, I would hate every minute of it!
I would also try to make time to just snuggle and love that little fuzzy girl, to help us both feel better.
((((((((nancy)))))))

It WILL all work out!

Re: Bee 3/21 need major help please!!

Nancy,

when is your AMPS/PMPS times? what time?

if you're saying pet sitter shot way out of 12/12 schedule, and you dont trust her - go with your instincts to do what you feel is safest for Bee.

Please dont be upset, this is fixable, and you're in control now. ((((hugs))))

Re: Bee 3/21 need major help please!!

Hey there. Ronnie's right, take a deep breath. It's ok, you'll work your way out of this. No need to cry, ok?

What's your schedule like the next 2-3 days? How much will you be able to monitor? How about today, are you able to monitor the full cycle if you give a shot? Do you have enough test strips and HC canned food if you shoot and she drops like a rock? Where are you relative to your regular shot times?

Bee has no history of ketones, right? Any chance you can get a urine ketone test? Don't be alarmed about the ketone questions - I'm asking because we're more concerned ketone-prone kitties getting enough insulin; if she's not ketone-prone, you may have some wiggle room w.r.t. skipping or reducing this shot. Also, any idea if she's been eating well while you were away?

Re: Bee 3/21 need major help please!!

Usual time is 10/10 Carolyn, when we're lucky enough to be on schedule. I'm home for the next two days, so I can do a curve & try to make some sense of all of this. LB was a total wreck, so I'm not sure I believe she even came by last night. She won't even answer her phone. Probably a good thing right now...

Thanks to everyone for the support.

P.S. Just caught the cross-posts. I'll skip the am dose, take a lot of tests, snuggle my baby & go for a dose at 10pm.

Re: Bee 3/21 need major help please!!

Hi Nancy, What a bummer! If I were you I would do a curve today just to see what Bee's numbers are and to try to get an idea of when her last insulin shot was from those data. Then at least you will have some inkling of where she is. I would try to get her back on her normal dosing schedule as soon as possible. I agree with Ronnie & Carolyn that you should go with your instincts. Always remember: Bee is a cat, and cats are tough! She might suffer a minor setback, but she'll be OK.
Ella

P.S. Our posts crossed. Carry on! You're doing the right thing!

Re: Bee 3/21 am~249

I'm sorry this happened, Nancy... and I'm very happy that Bee is now back in good, loving and safe hands. I echo what the others say... breathe and skip this morning's dose, and work on starting her back on the right track tonight. You're doing fine and it will be okay.

Re: Bee 3/21 am~249

Well, that just sucks. At least my friends who I might consider asking are too frightened to shoot insulin so I hire a vet tech. That's something to worry about next time.

It's possible that your neighbor had her own meter. (I'd ask if she used her own meter. If she asks why, you can point out that yours stores information and there wasn't anything there. At least she'll be embarrassed by your calling her bluff.) If not, then she probably didn't test. Again, while shooting blind scares all of us, to be honest, Gabby won't let anyone but me test her. When I travel, the shot is reduced enough to take the lack of testing into account. Even my very reliable DPS overslept last time and missed a shot. Life happens. We've all given a fur shot, got delayed at work etc. It's actually rather surprising but not unusual that some medical and veterinary professionals do not understand the necessity of following a strict 12/12 shooting schedule with Lantus and think about it like a shorter acting insulin. Some insulins are much more forgiving than Lantus. I've run into people that will talk about a "one hour window" -- you can shoot as much as an hour early or late. This may have been what your neighbor thought. I'm not trying to make an excuse but more what her mind set may have been.

I do agree with Ronnie. First, a deep breath. It sounds like it's been a hectic and stressful time and I hope the family emergency is over and all is at least better, if not good. If you are the least bit unsure of the timing, skip the AM shot. It will allow you to be on schedule and not worry that you are shooting way off schedule. It's not ideal, but it will be safe.

Re: Bee 3/21 am~249

I'm sorry Nancy, that's the last thing you need when you already have a family emergency going on too. It's ok, though, everything can be fixed.

What if you test again and see if she is going up, down, or sideways? I think (total guess) that *if* the neighbor was taking a lazy way out, she probably didn't shoot after 10pm, most likely she would have done it earlier, right? So I would think a dose at 10am should be ok. You could do a partial dose. You've shot at +10 before on purpose, I think, and that worked out ok, so even if for some reason she DID come over and shoot at midnight, 10:00 should be ok since Bee is in the 200's.

Skipping is safe too, and if you need to destress then that is a good option.

Re: Bee 3/21 am~249

I'm sorry you're so upset Nancy. However, it will be okay! Bee is fine; you are home and you'll get her back on track. I'll bet your neighbor shot, but didn't test. You won't use that person again, which is a shame since she's a nurse, but you'll find someone better. It really, truly will be fine, ok?

Re: Bee 3/21 am~249

Good Morning Nancy!!!

I hope you are feeling better. It's obvious that Bee is doing just fine so remember that, ok?

It looks like some great advice has been posted. You will be able to get Bee back to "normal" in no time.

7 PM Update

Thank you to everyone for your wonderful support. What a situation to come home to this morning! grr_red

Things are settling down & the kitties seem to have forgiven me for leaving them. We've had a day full of chats, snuggles, naps...and lots of tests for Bee. She's been in the yellow all day & I did give her a .5 shot at 10am when she was at 275. Now at +9~229. I will fill in the blanks on her ss later tonight or tomorrow.

Thanks again to all of you. We'll check back in later tonight!
