Beau back to ER #2 visit today

Woke up this morning to find Beau was peeing blood everywhere around the house. Called the emergency center and was told to take him in right away. Looks like an infection from the catheter from his overnight ICU visit a few days ago. Diagnosis is uti and cystitis. I was concerned about the prednisone possibly causing this but was informed although possible, they still would like me to continue the steroid treatment. Another long day for Beau.
 
Poor Beau, I hope he starts feeling better :(

Did they give you antibiotics for the UTI? Like Sienne, I don’t like seeing steroids and infection together, but it seemed from your previous post that you didn’t really have a choice re: steroids for now.

You could try using D-mannose to help draw bacteria out? It works only on certain types of bacteria but I have had good luck with it with my UTI-prone kitty who’s on daily pred because she is allergic to life. I mix it with baby food and water and give it either on a plate or in an oral syringe.
 
They gave me clavamox 125mg every 12hours. We discussed the steroid, she doesn’t want me to stop since it’s seemed to help him significantly the last few days. Also gave me gabapentin for pain to give every 8 hours. I didn’t give him any when we got home because he’s not crying or showing signs of pain.I don’t want to dose him up with so many things and of course I’m monitoring him closely if I think he’s in any pain I’d give him some but for now I’d rather not. He’s been through a lot the last few days.
 
Ugh poor guy. Just a heads up, there’s a good chance the clavamox might give him diarrhea - it’s pretty common.
As for gabapentin, in my experience it’s great for pain at small doses (25 or 50mg). Whenever my cats have been given more it made them restless and wobbly, quite the opposite of the desired effect.
 
Thank you for that heads up about the antibiotic! Good to know. They really want me to keep a close eye on him as far as if he’s urinating ok, they said he could develop a blockage which would be another emergency. Im supposed to make sure he pees within a 6 hour timeframe.. and without straining or pain. Still waiting for him to go, he did drink and eat, but is just sleeping for now.
 
He’s been to the ER twice in a 4 day span with an overnight stay. I do have a former scheduled follow up appointment with my primary vet Tuesday. As of now I think I want to cancel. His ICU stay tested everything pretty much possible besides the neurological part (which is what they would like to do eventually) and then this visit today, i honestly can’t afford another trip to the vet this week. I did call them Friday before the 2nd trip and they wanted me to keep the appointment. It’s a follow up visit for his diabetes diagnosis. I’ll call and talk to them again tomorrow. With the emergency center telling me to stop insulin treatment for now, I don’t think I need to take him for another stressful event.
 
I would do the same if it were me. He needs quiet to recover.
As for water intake, it’s super important both for his UTI and his diabetes - anything that works is fair game: diluting his favorite canned food into warm water to make a “soup”, giving said soup with a syringe orally if he won’t drink it on his own… it’s not fun but there’s no way around it (unless you have subQ fluids at home, which would be ideal to get a good amount in without stressing him - they probably did give him some at the ER?).

Yes he was on IV fluids at the ER. He did just go to the bathroom finally, I think he knew I was stalking him a little. But he went, in the box, no blood did not look like any straining or pain. https://share.icloud.com/photos/0bdUa9MWZx5qM2_aWL2ogfCYg
 
Since he’s came home from the first ER stay after being given the steroid injection and a dose at home the following day… I haven’t seen him being so much like himself again! He walks normally again, he actually went up the stairs which he hasn’t done in 2 months…. He would climb in the liter box but half in half out and miss. Or go outside it. I haven’t seen him actually get in the box and pee like that in a while.
 
Much better from what he was experiencing this morning. Peeing blood in puddles all over but especially outside the liter boxes

If you are going to stop insulin I would recommend strongly that you test for ketones in the urine every day. An infection and no insulin in a diabetic cat can lead to ketones and possibly DKA.
You will need a bottle of Ketostix from Walmart or a pharmacy to test for the ketones in the urine. Also make sure you kitty is eating well.
 
Thank you! I wish could’ve asked about that at the emergency. That’s good to know now atleast. I wonder why there’s so little instruction or info for diabetic cats wherever I go. I feel like my primary vet isn’t educated on it and the ER wasn’t too concerned about any of it other than telling me to not give him any insulin unless he reads a 250plus.
I asked if he were to read at that what dose would I give him? They said call and ask.. if it happens..
 
You will find a lot of vets do not know a lot about feline diabetes. It’s different to dog diabetes. And there is a lot to learn and new things come up. They have many animal and different diseases to learn about. We concentrate on feline diabetes on the whole here. I would post and ask for help

They did not do an ultrasound. Beau is doing ok, feeling a bit better. In reading his medical report they gave us, it says his urinalysis showed “ TNTC RBCs” in addition to neutrophils and rod bacteria. I assumed that is just the UTI caused by the catheter he got the day before,like the vet told me. But could this be something that was lingering for a while.. causing him to get so sick.. is a uti something that would develop overnight like that?

@Virginie Beau did get diarrhea from the antibiotic, thank you for the heads up or I would’ve been freaking out!

Oh dear, not the kind of prediction I like to see come true haha... do you have probiotics already? If not, I have had good luck clearing up diarrhea due to meds with Proviable D/C. The capsules are tiny, and my cats really seem to like the taste (and if Beau doesn't, they are tiny enough to pill them).

Thank you I’ll order the probiotic! Will the diarrhea last through his whole treatment? He gets 1 pill twice a day.( 4 more days) his feces his less liquidity but just very soft/mushy today.
