Good Morning all,

Beastie has been off the juice now for 3 days. Her numbers are still looking good but I worry every time I see a slightly higher number. She started day 1 with AMBG 52. She is totally off of the dry DM as of this morning. I mixed it with her Fancy Feast last night but she really didn't care if the dry was in there or not.

Beast is such and easy girl, I am sooooo lucky to have her.

Wishing all a good day.

Woohoo, Beast! You are doing great! All of those numbers are absolutely beautiful. Normal cat BG is 40-120 on a human meter.

Beast is on OTJ trial day three,
and still insulin free.
She is such a lucky girl,
giving the OTJ trial a whirl,

Re: Beast Day 3 OTJ AMBG 61

Thank you Deb for helping me get the lingo correct. Beast and I sure do appreciate it. Thank you all for looking in on Beast and her numbers! I decided not to test after AM Feeding and wait until PM. Poor Beast has been though a lot with me learning how to home test, poke, poke poke on her ears and new food.

Re: Beast Day 3 OTJ AMBG 61

Not sure if anyone gave you the "official" OTJ trial instructions.
OTJ Trial instructions

Here are the instructions for an OTJ trial:
  • Test at your normal AMPS and PMPS times. Feed multiple small meals throughout the day as much as possible (small meals are less likely to overwhelm a newly functioning pancreas). The morning test is now called the AMBG. The evening test is now called the PMBG.
  • If your cat is green (0-99 human meter) at your normal test times, no need to test further until the next "PS" time, just feed small meals and go about your day. If the numbers are blue (100-199 human meter), feed a small meal and test again after about 3 hours. Food raises BG's. So if the number is lower 3-4 hours after a meal, then the pancreas is working!
  • After 2 weeks, if everything is looking good, we have a party! And boy, do we party hearty.

Sometimes, the trial doesn't work the first time and we have to give a little more support by starting the cat with a tiny dose of insulin again. I had to do that with Wink. We simply start the cat back on a tiny dose of insulin to support the pancreas with healing for a bit longer. Our goal is a strong remission and it's better to be safe now then sorry later that you rushed it. With just a little more time we will probably get that strong remission we are looking for.

Re: Beast Day 3 OTJ AMBG 61

I did not have Official OTJ trial instructions. This helps a lot, I thought I needed to test after feeding. Thank you again Deb for all your help :-D

Gave Beast her PM Feeding of Fancy Feast Classic Beef she ate about half and is now vomiting. Is this normal and what should I do?

Was it a "scarf and barf"? If Beast ate fast and threw it up quickly (and it was still pretty much the consistency it was in the first place), you might just need to give her a few minutes to settle her stomach and then give her a little bit to eat...and if that stays down, give a little more in about half hour...small meals instead of a big one

It could be due to the transition to wet food.
Also, beef can sometimes be too rich (Ripley vomits beef flavors), and some kitties have a beef allergy.
You might want to give Beast a milder flavor, like chicken or turkey, if you have it.

Sorry for late reply had to walk my dog.

Chris, it was a "scarf and barf" and barf and barf.

Josie, I am throwing out the beef and going to give the chicken now, its been well over an hour so her tummy should be settled.

China has done that too...I could swear she didn't eat THAT much!! But if it came back really soon after eating it and was pretty much the same consistency it was when it came out of the can, usually just giving her a little time and then doing small meals stays down after that

Hopefully Beast will keep the next round of food down! At least since you're not shooting, you don't have the panic of having insulin on board and no food!

Hope you both have a peaceful night..and Beast continues to do so well on her OTJ trial! That's awesome she's responded so quickly!

Thank you Chris and Josie

i gave beast a small amount of the chicken and she so far has kept it down, although it took some coaxing she didn't want to touch the wet food. She just laid there looking at it so I had to stir it with my fingers then she ate it. My big Beastie is such a brat. :-D :-D

Kim --

It may not be a matter of beef being too rich for Beast. FWIW, many cats are actually allergic to beef and to fish. Gabby has the same reaction to beef that Beast did. I would just eliminate it from his diet unless you think this was an isolated event.
