I can't remember how to tag someone from here. The @ sign doesn't seem to be working. Chris and China can you tag Marge and Gracie so she can read the blood work on Bears kidneys so she can explain what they all mean? Help
Bear is still in remission since June 2020.

Bear 17yrs diagnosed with diabetes 5/6/2020. He has arthritis also. He's on Bupren for the pain and Prozinc for his diabetes. He's been getting 3-4u with a U100 syringe. Still dialing in.

Marjorie is more experienced with labs than me, but I see stage two kidney disease. Not unusual for a 17 to cat. Kidneys are often the weak area. It doesn’t say in your signature what you’re feeding, but you are going to want to look for a low carb food that is also low phosphorous. When my cat had ckd she ate Weruva foods. They have a big variety of choices that were low carb and phosphorous. Make sure to leave extra water bowls around or a fountain. She needs lots of water to flush those kidneys. I’d bring her back again for bloodwork every 3-4 months to have the kidney values checked again.

the liver values are slightly elevated, too.

I agree with Janet. Very mild elevation of ALT which bears watching.

It’s too soon for subq fluids at home but there are several things you should be addressing now so they don’t overwhelm you when the values start to rise. First, I’d get intimately familiar with Tanya’s CKD website.

The most important sections to look at first are on phosphorus, anemia, proteinuria, blood pressure, and potassium. So far, all his values associated with those parameters look good so now is the time to focus on as low a P food as you can get, along with LC. There are canned food charts on Tanya’s that can help you find a LC, low P food.

Addressing these before they become an issue will help his longevity. I started giving my last CKD kitty B vitamins at about where Bear is now. His HCT never dropped below 30% in four years. He was very stable with CKD and crossed at 18 from an unrelated issue.

He is on FF and purees to help him finish his food and to make sure he gets his full amount of Mirelax to keep him regular. We give him only a few pieces of greenies and a very small amount of dry when we are at work Saturdays and Sundays. Bear is 18 and 3 months so he has been with us a very long time.

I finally talked to my vet and we are switching to k/d wet food. There is only chicken and tuna. Is there anything else I can buy over the counter in non prescription form for him? @Marje and Gracie

The problem with kd foods at this stage is they are low protien which can lead to muscle wasting AND very high in carb. VERY. Not good for diabetics at all.
