Hi everyone,

We just bought bear Special Kitty wet food. He won't eat it. We put the old dry food on top and he hasn't touched it.

PLEASE any help you can offer would be helpful. I don't want him to starve!

Note** last feeding 730 AM

So we couldn't let him starve. We gave him fresh chicken breast (which we use as his treat for being a good kitty when we take his bgl) and tuna out of a can. He eats and loves both.

Any ideas?

Try putting a tiny bit of the canned food on his tongue with your finger. Cats can be so finnicky when it comes to food they'll refuse to even try it. Once they do though, they'll eat just fine. Whenever I try a new canned food with my cats, one of them generally needs a bit of encouragemeant (putting a bit on her tongue), then she'll eat it like there is no tomorrow.

You could also try crumbling a bit of freeze dried chicken breast on top. There isn't anything I couldn't get my cats to do for that

You may have already tried this, but have you tried (since he loves tuna) just trying to squeeze the juice out of a can of tuna over his canned food? Maybe fool him into thinking it's the "real thing"?

Is Special Kitty the first band you've tried? If so, it's possible that your cat may just have a finicky palate and won't eat it. My diabetic was like this and refused brand after brand until I found a few that he liked.

While Special Kitty is inexpensive and low carb, there's no point in feeding it if your cat flat out refuses to eat it. Try Fancy Feast. Many cats like that. A lot of the non-gravy varities are low in carbs. They're on the "old" food chart, http://binkyspage.tripod.com/CanFoodOld.html Wellness is good and comes in large sized cans. You can find it at Petco stores and specialty pet stores. Look for the ones that have the little yellow grain-free triangle on the label.

All my cats REFUSE to eat Special Kitty, even Oliver and he eats just about anything.... I did not even realize he would turn his nose up at any brand.

What I did was to print a list of Binky's info then went to the store and got a can of many different kinds.
I know that cost is important, but if the cat won't eat it, you have wasted the money and the cat's still hungry.

I think many people have luck with Friskies pates, no grilled or gravies, and also Fancy Feast, same types.
Try to pick up one can of maybe a half dozen diff brands. If you find that Bear has expensive taste, try mixing half and half and see how he goes.

Neither of my cats would eat Special Kitty, either. I second the recommendation to buy an assortment of low carb foods and see what Bear likes.

See my Tips for Transitioning Dry Food Addicts to Canned Food - sidebar catinfo.org.

Patience and time is key. It is not going to happen overnight. It took me three long months to get my cats switched over but I could have (and would have) pushed harder if any of them had been diabetic.

It is not unusual for cats to take weeks to switch to canned food. Many are very addicted to dry food.

Patience.....and don't give up.

Mommy to SugarBear,
You might try to purchase a few packets of ForaFlora...I found a vet that sell by the each.. I purchased 2 and tried it and it worked. You sprinkle ont he top of the food, mix a bit and sprinkle just a little more on the top.
You can also purchase this on line cheaper; however, as picky as my crew are, I did not want to buy a box and them not use it.
I have also used sardine and tuna juice. Cooked chicken livers cut up in the wet food worked too. I will boil chicken, separate the meat, and freeze both the meat in baggies and the juice in small 2-3 serving size and mix in the food for their liquid.
Good luck and paw hugs to ya!

Do read the article referenced on how to transition kibble addicts onto wet food.

With Maverick we had to start syringe feeding him to get him eating wet food. He ended up lapping the watered down food off a saucer and we went from there. Finger feeding is a great idea also - but make it a really good experience. Lots of love and praise.

Did you try to feed it all at once, or did you try to slowly shift to canned food?

Switching all at once is a recipe for vomiting and diarrhea, plus leter refusal to eat that food again since it made the cat ill.

Mine will eat wet food but flatly refuse to eat Special Kitty anything. ShuShu (civvie) buries it - even goes and gets paper from elsewhere and drags it UP on the chair then onto the table to cover the nasty stuff....he won't even get back up on the table until I show him the offensive stuff is gone. But then KT won't eat FF chicken pate...but ShuShu will take you down for it.

Oh the joys of our fur-persons....

Its good to read that you are careful about your bear.
You should make him hungry all the day then give him food to eat.
I am sure that it will eat the wet food easily.
