Bear 4-18/AMPS 337/ +2 95/+7.75 216/PMPS 493

Okay so big priority note.
Ask Vet where I can get an insulin syringe with removable needles, to try dextrose.

Holy cat! When Bear works the juice he doesn't mess around!

The vet should be able to supply you with a syringe without a needle for that purpose. They provide them when they Rx oral Bupe for instance.

+3.5 (44)
i found the needle in Bear's Med sack from the vet, good gosh.
It is huge and 3 ML/CC.
What do you guys think +4 to +4.5 usual nadir would you give him dextrose at this point and if so how much??

+4 (44) 1/10th of 1 ML with 3 ML syringe 50% Dextrose
I have no idea how much that would calculate to a U-100 amount....

Sometimes if cats are going low, they go low earlier than their usual nadir. I hope this is true today.

That vial is producing a lot of suction on that needle.
Am I supposed to add air?
Yes, you should be putting the same amount of air into the vial as insulin you're going to withdraw. Don't want to create a vacuum. A friend/pharmacist told me about that trick. I didn't realize that's what I was supposed to be doing...

Bear has really given you a run today hasn't he? Luci likes to do that to me now and then - and she LOVES to lick a drop or two of honey off my hand...that girl loves her sweets...almost as much as her mama bean. She comes by her diabetes honestly - what can I say?? No more ice cream for Miss Luci!

+ 5 (50) 40u honey
I am leaving out food.
Dr said mom could be 30 min. late.
They were applying for an Appi Graph which could be in today.
I can come back for one more check.

+5.5 (56)
Real happy there weren't any police on my route
Bear ate all of the 1.3 oz of 18%
I think he is safe this late in his cycle but will put out additional food.

So Bear was fine while I was gone and had eaten an additional 1oz of 18%.

You put the air in first of what you are going to draw then pull out your dose, is that right?

Looks like the bounce has started. Could you modify the subject line so people won't think he's still teasing the sharks.

A couple comments about today. First, I noticed you testing and feeding honey every 15 minutes between +3 and +4. It typically takes 20-30 minutes for the carbs to go from plate to blood stream. Timing is ECID, but testing every 15 minutes might be too frequent. I don't know what you use for high carb wet food, but there are some out there over 20% that use peas, rice or potato for carbs if you want to avoid wheat. I had on hand some Weruva Grandma's Chicken Soup at 21% carbs, for emergencies. It used potatoes for starch and had some easy to feed gravy.

What types of syringes are you using, and are you using calipers? Bear did a whole lot of nothing on this dose for the first six cycles and just wondering if there are differences in what you are giving. The last time you tried 3.25 units he hit lime green right away.

I asked DH to pick up a caliper since he was going to the hardware store and he did but it isn't modern digital but old school. :)
It is on current to buy list.
I am using U-100 0.3 ML, 29 Gauge with 1/2 needles and 1/2 unit markings.
I leave one line's width below the 3 unit line.
So the pic of the needle that everyone uses for a reference for 0.1u, I am leaving the same amount of light below the 3 unit.
I used Natures Variety (Petsmart brand) Turkey & Duck in Gravy, Grain Free, Natural Balance Platefulls.

I will order the Weruva online, sadly neither Petsmart or Petco have it here in OK.

There are others besides Weruva that are over 20%, some even over 25%. I was just using that one as an example.

I was wondering which brand of syringe. Some are notoriously worse than others on their line markings.

Oh, I switched to Walgreens about a month ago because 3 different Walmarts said they were discontinuing the Relion U-100 0.3 ML 29 Gauge 1/2" needles.

You know you might have a good point some of the stoppers in the syringes are slanted.

So I have been going over in my mind all possibilities and I think I have the answer to this total nose dive.

Yesterday morning I overslept, my husband knew I didn't go to bed till after 5AM because my stepdaughter's cat (now Jeff & I's by default) brought a very healthy baby rabbit into our garage carrying it like it was a kitten.
I spent 3 and 1/2 hours moving stuff around in my garage trying to catch it, missing it, moving more stuff, repeat etc. until I finally caught it. (Sidenote) Rabbits hide in corners.
So being cautious my husband called me and woke me up 15 minutes after I should have been up.
I was blurry eyed and rushed to draw Bear's insulin, tested him and while he was eating chicken treats I shot him.
As soon as I had depressed the plunger all the way I thought that didn't feel right, the distance I had to push, plus the time it took, it just seemed off.
I thought did I pull too much insulin but then I thought you are imagining that the injection was different because you are wiped out with only 3 hrs sleep.

Well if I overdrew Bear's syringe I would guess it was by a full unit, instead of 3.25u it was probably 4.25u.
The question is does that coordinate with Bear diving the next morning?

Wildcare Rehabilitation picked up the baby Cottontail Bunny.

I used the BD Ultrafine II, cause that's all that's available here. Not sure I'd recommend them. At times there was an additional 1/3 of a unit under the sloppily marked zero line. Calipers allow you to be consistent, regardless of the markings on the syringe. I looked for a note on the SS as to when you switched syringes, and didn't see anything. Of course my eyes are tired from doing my parents taxes today. Seems a bit odd for a dive to be a couple cycles after a possible high dose.

Good on you capturing the bunny and saving it.

Well, you didn't miss it. I never thought of putting that on the SS. :banghead:
I asked Marje about them about two days after I started using them, I'll see if I can find that.

The insulin change wouldn't have been significant. You had done some rapid dose drops and were just working your way back up. Guess that wasn't a contributing factor.
