Bayer contour meter reading "HI" for Louie at +2

Hi,

I posted this on the Lantus board, but figured I would post it here as well.

Louie just started Lantus and todays reading at +2 read at "HI"- I checked his reading w/ another strip and got the same thing...I checked the meter on myself and it is working fine. I assume this means his bgs are off the charts. What should I do?

Also, What dose should I be giving Louie. My vet had said to do 1 unit is bg less then 360, 1/5-2 units if bg more then 360. But then I was told on this board, that it is recommended you stick with one dose and let the cat acclimate to it. Ive been giving him 1, which was fine at first...but now he is really high!

Any help would be appreciated!

I just talked to my dad who informed me that he walked into the kitchen and found Louie eating the dogs food--somehow he got the storage container open. I have no idea how much he ate-- In the past, he has gotten into the dog food and has never had SUCH a high reading that there is no number. :-/

Is there anything I can do?

Thanks!

Mostly, just hang in there and make sure that can't happen again.

Also check for urine ketones with testing strips.

I do my best to keep any food with carbs away from him...but I can't control everything that happens in my house-wish I could...lol. :-/ I have never been able to test he urine for ketones, as there are other cats in the house and he won't pee in front of me and will not pee if I separate him....he just freaks and freaks and gets all crazy.

You are right. You can't control everything. Now you know how carbs affect his bg readings though, so try to avoid high carb if at all possible. In some cats, it just takes a few bites to make a huge difference.

Some people who have to have dry in the house buy those plastic bins that are impossible to break into. And put it up high.

To get ketone tests on our Oliver, we had to put him in the basement with a litter box full of aquarium gravel. He hated seeing the clean box and would go - but not if we were watching.

Thanks!

I am going to try and figure out a place to lock him up and try to get urine to test his ketones. I need to talk to my mom and see which room might work.

It's so hard to keep him away from carbs....he is such a carb addict! A couple of weeks ago, my mom baked pumpkin bread for the kid. She wrapped it in foil and put it in the cabinet...I guess my dad or someone then left the cabinet open and Louie got the bread out, ripped through the foil and ate some before anyone caught him. Every night when I give the kids dinner, he comes and sits under the high chair, waiting to see if the baby will drop anything for him. aah! lol I have to constantly watch and make sure the baby hasnt dropped anything, or if he did, I need to get it or make sure the dog gets it before Louie.

I suspect part of the management will be training the other adults in the house!

And get some child safety locks for the cabinets - if the cat can get in, eventually, the toddler will find a way!
