Good evening FDMB friends,

A short recap. Sat evening the vet wanted me start a no insulin trial throughout the weekend with Baxter. After a weekend of no insulin & giving me a sweet taste of what its like to not give insulin. Baxter's BG is up. I was really hoping that this might be it. Hoping he wouldn't need insulin anymore. When I tested him at 6:00pm with a # of 212 I felt so disappointed. How can one not feel so disappointed after going 2 days with no insulin? I tried so hard through the weekend to not get excited. The vet even warned me to not bank on anything just yet. Still I am a little disappointed. Baxter's pancreas just teased me! It gave me false hope & I should have known better. This (FD) really does suck!! angry(2)_cat

He hasn't eaten yet so should I expect it to continue to go up?
Is it possible that it will come down to a normal range after eating?
If it is still raising before dinner & after should I go ahead & give insulin about .25?

I haven't spoke to the vet about his #'s over the weekend. So he isn't aware he is currently in the 200's. We didn't talk about what to do if he does rise.

as long as you're around to test him I would do the microdosing. Cello was on and off insulin for about 2 weeks before going OTJ. You should be happy that you're so close!!! Don't be frustrated, just get comfortable with the microdosing (maybe 200 is your number) and he'll be off in no time, he just needs a little help.

edit: for the record, when I was microdosing I didn't tie the shots to his eating at all. I would just shoot to help him out at a high number, only time I tied it to food was if he was borderline, then i would make sure he wasn't going down after eating, but at 200 I would microdose for sure (my number was 160)

Well I tested him at 8:00 before food he was at 144. He came down on his own. I talked to the vet about microdosing he said no. He said that .25 was so small that we wanted to see what Baxter pancreas would do without anything. I am going to speak with the vet tomrrow.
I am so happy. I just try to not get to happy just yet. Because its so easy frustrated or disappointed.
I think you are right we are close. I hope.

just dont let yourself get dissapointed if he needs some more shots! he is on his way to healing, so many people would give so much to be in that situation! the insulin only stays in his system for less than 12 hours, so his pancreas is starting to heal. If he needs a few more shots here and there, oh well! you've done such a good job and he responded really quickly

Cello went a week without needing a shot then went up to 220 and I gave him a microdose then. Brought him right down and then he went OTJ.

I think micro dosing is what might help Baxter's pancreas to heal.
Altho with him doing the self come down...it is a delicate time
I used to say the 2 scariest times of FD is the beginning and when your cat is ready to come off the juice. Sometimes they just need a wee bit more help.

Thank you so much Lori. Very true about the scariest times. I was terrified in the beginning & couldn't sleep as much. Now I am a little bit more relaxed & can sleep a little better at night. I know the angels of health are taking care of him while I sleep.
