I was squeamish about testing at first, too. Doug would test Hershey and I would sit holding my breath with eyes closed tightly. Then, one night I was home alone with Hershey and he started acting like he really wasn't himself. I was so afraid that there was something up with his numbers (or down with his numbers) and I couldn't help him not having a clue even what his BG was. I decided that night - that was IT - I would NOT be home alone with him and feel that helpless. He was/is dependent on me and I needed to get over it - so, I got Doug to teach me how to test. Now, I don't always get it first try, but Hershey is usually patient and gives me another try.
So, I kind of understand his fear of hurting Baxter. But, thinking you test too much. That's what I thought about Doug initially. He was like a kid with a new toy!!! I had to reel him back in a little ;-)
I hope your honey will warm up to the idea of testing soon -
