Hi, all - Got home with Bat-Bat about an hour ago; she's still a little woozy, but was very happy to have a snack of FF turkey pate @ 4 (about .75 oz) to tide her over until PMPS time at 6:45p. (Looks like that food is going to stay down, too.)

Bat-Bat's very first dental cleaning (ever!) went really well. Vet said that although she had lots of plaque on her teeth, all teeth were in great shape & cleaned up beautifully - said that's pretty great, too, for a cat who's pushing 11 years. (Said there are 3 tiny teeth missing, but it's anyone's guess when that happened, and that sometimes they don't all come in when a cat's a kitten, either.)

And - hooray - no antibiotics required!

Since they already had her knocked out, they did a full blood panel + urinalysis. Her blood test results were all well within normal limits. (When she was seen @ end-Feb., she was severely anemic & had elevated liver enzymes, in addition to the UTI & high BG that confirmed she'd slipped out of remission.)

Today, the only exception was her BG: It was 201 @ 7:00 a.m.when I tested her at home. (She was NOT happy about having no breakfast!). At the vet's office @ 9:53 a.m., her BG was 180.

Won't have urinalysis results for a day or two (he sent specimen to an outside lab), but said he anticipates that's probably normal, too. Remarked again that he's astonished at how fully she's recovered, given that in February he was doubtful she'd make it another week.

So I told him (again): Without the great guidance & support of this extraordinary group of people at FDMB, I don't think we'd have come nearly so far. He smiled & said, "Yeah, she's had one phenomenal recovery; so keep on doing what you're doing!" I told him about Dr. Pierson's food chart, too: He wants that for future reference for his other diabetic cat patients (am emailing him the pdf).

We've got a happy - albeit still sleepy - kitty here, and a happy cat-mom, too. To anyone who's hesitating about getting your kitty in for a fist-time dental: Just do it, because a healthy mouth helps make for a healthier cat. (And possibly lower BG levels, too!)

P.S. (In case you hadn't already guessed, fellow members: I'm so grateful that you're all here, because we're all in this (quest for healthy kitties) together!:bighug::bighug::bighug:)

Robin, I'm so glad to hear that everything went well! Also glad to hear that they did some tests and they're all looking normal so far! Sounds like it was a great day...and Bat-Bat is probably thrilled to be home!

Woo hoo...so glad to see that Bat-Bat is home now. I bet she is sooooo happy. I don't know why dental cleaning is such a big deal to us, filled with anxiety but it is....we all are so anxious to take them in and to get them back home. I think that one reason is that they don't know what is happening to them and we feel so bad because of that. Anyway, another woo hoo!

Whew! I know you're relieved girl! So happy for you that all went well and you got such a stellar report.
She's so lucky to have you for her Mama.
I'm gonna go out on a limb here..and say the $450 bath towel was probably the vet techs version of our kitty burrito. ;) If ya know what I'm sayin'..!

PS. We're glad YOU'RE here too! :bighug::bighug:

Lol....Love that! It's like a fancy hotel towel...only for kitties! Sam will need to go for a cleaning sometime this winter. I do dread it, but it's encouraging to hear how well Bat-Bat did with it! It won't be his first, I just don't like him going under anesthesia. Also great to hear about all of her lab results turning out so well! You've done a great job taking care of her!

When Sam has had his cleanings before, the vet always says I can pick up around 4pm, but ends up calling MUCH earlier because he starts caterwauling and driving everyone crazy!

Great news! Glad to hear Bat-Bat and Mom are doing well!
FWIW - my middle boy is missing 2 front teeth too. Found out when he had dental surgery at age 2. Specialist told me the same thing...probably never had them.:bighug: & scritches

:bighug::bighug:Yeah!!! I know you are glad that is over! What a relief. It is such a big deal to all of us, I believe because of the anesthesia. But, your girl did good!! And she didn't have to have any teeth removed. ( apparently, she's been doing her own extractions!) The $450 bath towel is funny and a nice souvenir of her first dental adventure. It will be interesting to see how she settles back in. Thanks for letting us know. I missed this thread last night before I went to bed early. Have a great day loving up Bat-Bat. :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

ETA: Did they take care of her claw issue for you?

Yep, and trimmed all claws for us, too. As we can only ever get 1 or 2 at a time - and then only if she's really dead asleep. She wakes on the first snip, and bites hard by the second. (Little bugger!) Cleaned her ears, too. So was like a "kitty tuneup" when all was said & done.;)

Awesome, good deal !!

Yeah, Bobbie - I actually made up a little list of stuff I wanted them to do (and not do, like "no convenia, no metacam"). It had been 6 months since she'd been in to see the vet, and as she's "hard-to-handle" for anyone else in general (I know her file's red-flagged:rolleyes:) I try to have as much tuneup-type stuff done as possible when she's there & knocked out cold!;)

Have to tell you this: They gave me a little toothbrush & some chicken-flavored kitty toothpaste (assured me there's no sugar in it, hmm).
Had to laugh at that ... yeah, riiiiight, like Bat is EVER going to let me come at her mouth with a toothbrush! (Ha! Can you hear my blood dripping onto the floor already?:p)

HA! Yeah, somewhere packed away, I have a finger toothbrush also! Never used it, but I think I will try to after tomorrow. Maybe, squeeze a tad amount of the paste on your finger and if she likes it, then MAYBE she'll let you brush her teeth another time. (In my purrrrrrfect cat world)

So happy to hear Bat Bat is home again, had a great check up and is doing so well! I know it is stressful for both furry friend and parents (and wallets ). She even has a new fluffy towel out of the deal! We are all so happy for you and Bat Bat! :):bighug:

I brush my two dog's teeth (both German Shepherd mix) with a Sonic electric toothbrush. They don't mind it. I wish I could try it on the cats but I can't even get close to them with it. I use organic Jason Powersmile Vanilla Power on the dogs. It does not have any sweeteners but am not sure if there are any natural sugars in it.

Haha oh Robin, I know how you feel! Remember that Bat-Bat and Elektra are the same....there is NO WAY I could brush her teeth and draw back a working hand!
