Hi Debbie and Bart,
I haven't been to the site for a little while - I hope things are going well for you. I've got Gus "stabilized" I think, for now anyway. I would like to start increasing his protein level, but I have not started with that yet. Gus is 9 years old, and I sure hope to have him for as long as I can. He is really my little snuggle bunny when he wants to be. I know he comes off to people that don't know him as a bit standoff-ish. Once you get to know him, you find out what a baby he is and how much he loves attention.
He has gone thru alot already, as he has had sub-total colectomy surgery, to relieve a condition called megacolon.
He would get very constipated and was not able to get much out, and he was straining when at the litter box. Their colon gets extremely packed and enlarges. I had him on medication for a year to help him poop, but then it seemed not to help as much anymore, and the next choice was surgery or to put him down - which I could not do. So he had the surgery, and he has been doing very well since. That's why I don't want to upset his routine too much by changing his food too drastically.
He is also a naughty eater, he eats the dog's food! I have a mechanical feeder for him because he is a chow hound, and will eat too much and then throw up. All of that puts me in a situation where I don't think that I can really put him on a diet of all canned food, as he will just go eat dog food whenever he wants to, or my other cat Muriel might eat all his canned food. It is not so easy to make a change like that when you have 2 cats and a dog. I found some high protein dry food (brand name Evo) that I plan to mix with his present food gradually while lowering his insulin - to hopefully get his dosage down. Maybe by some crazy alignment of the stars we could even get him to be free of insulin!!
Again - I hope things are going well for you.
Take care,
Lisa and Gus
