If there is anyone that lives in the Madison area I would like to talk to them. I'm only about 30 miles from Madison wis

Hi Debbie, and, of course, you too, sweet Bart,

I know someone in Wisconsin. I'll contact him for you and Bart. He has a really good heart. You can trust him.

Love and continuing hugs for you, Bart, and his brother (name???),
Deb and Nikki -- and, Giz, who taught me how to dance...

Hi Debbie, and, of course, you too, sweet Bart,

My friend, like M L, isn't that close to you; but, thinks he knows one or two who might be closer...

Hang tight.

Love and as many hugs as you can handle from New Jersey,
Deb and Nikki -- and, Giz, who taught me to believe...

PS: Who knew your state was so big?

Barts brothers name is Rufus. Bart is doing ok he slept with me last night for the first time in 2 weeks. I'm going to get Barts medical records and take him somewhere else these people are just to high and they charge for everything. And they won't let you have a payment plan. I just moved up here from Beloit which is 1 1/2 hours away and their old vet wouldn't have been this costly. Thank you everyone for your help I'll be in touch

Hi Bart and Debbie,

I live in Stoughton, just south and east of Madison, WI. My cat Gus was recently diagnosed and we have begun this weird journey together. If you want to send me a message, I am new to this site - if you are still out there...
Lisa and Gus

Hi Lisa, I wrote this once and think I submitted somewhere else, So I will try again. I haven't been on here much the last few months. Was having problems with my computer and also found a new vet that has been helping me out alot. She comes to our house which is very nice and less stressful. How is Gus doing. It takes time to adjust to having a diabetic cat. The only real problem I have is being able to go anywhere for a couple of days. And finding someone to take care of him. So far I haven't found anyone yet. I'm new in Sauk City so I don't know many people here and the ones I do know I wouldn't trust giving Bart his shot. He's my baby and so I'm overly protective of him. Bart is on 5 units of lantus twice a day. I feed him friskies and I also give him wellness core which is a dry food which I know the people on here frown on its high in protein and 11% carb. I only give it to him when I have to be gone for a few hours. It doesn't spike up his BG and the vet said that its fine to give to him. He started to walk on his hocks so I started giving him B12 and it has helped. I also give him Milk thistle for his liver. His numbers do bounce around at times. My vet said that cats are hard to regulate. This website is helpful but it can be confusing at times because they tend to tell you one thing one time and then tell you something else another. Which makes it frustating and hard at times. Maybe you have things that you do for Gus you would like to share any help would be great. hope to hear from you

Hi Bart, ya - I've been a little confused about where posts end up too - but I found yours! Gus is doing OK, I believe, he is currently at 3 units of Lantus 2x/day. I plan on doing a curve on him tomorrow. I still have him on the Hill's WD that the vet prescribed, and I give him moist food 2x/day when I am home morning and evening. I feel like I want to get him stabilized before I start messing with his food any further. The last time I took it upon myself to change his food (before the diabetes diagnosis), he ended up with crystals in his urine. I just don't want to cause him any further complications. My vet is OK, I like them and trust them, but it is getting pricey to go in. That's why I am trying to do my own curves - saves almost $80!
I hope things are going better with Bart. Have you asked @ your vet if they know of anyone that would take care of Bart while you are gone? I asked @ my vet, and they recommended someone that previously worked there. She has come in the past to give meds and feed my 2 cats more than once, and she is very good! Too bad you are not closer - I could give Bart his shot...
I feel llike you do - I find the site to be helpful yet confusing. I am glad that I came across it though, as at least I have learned some things that I did not know before. I knew that I could do my own testing, but was apprehensive and didn't know anything about it - I feel better about that now. I still need to get a feel for how to read curves and what action to take (I currently take the info to the vet and let them decide what to do next). I also learned that the Lantus pen will last longer than 30 days. I am using my first one until it is all used up, and I will be 2 to 3 weeks over the 30 day supposed expiration date.
Well, this is getting pretty long, so I will close. Lisa and Gus out. We'll talk to you again!

Hi Lisa and Gus, Sorry it took me so long to get back with you. Wish that you lived closer also been calling a couple of petsitters in the area but they went out of business lack of customers. I've been trying to start my own petsitting business with no luck either. I'm talking to my vet today to get more lantus and to see if she knows someone. I don't use the pens my lantus last 4 months since Bart is on 5 units twice a day. This website did help me some with the first vet that I had they wanted to nickel and dime me to death. They wanted to see Bart every 3 months which would have cost me 249.00 each time and they wanted at first to keep him a weekend to get him regulated. Which my new vet said that its hard to have them do that because the cat is stressed and so their numbers are going to be high. Bart has never been anywhere but home for his whole 10 years. So the old vet didn't show me how to test him I learned that online but they did show me where to give him his shot. Which they told me to do it in his scruff to lift up and find the triangle after coming on this site I found that you can give him his shot anywhere. I was nervous also had a few hair shots at first. but as time got on its easy and Bart is fine with it. How old is Gus? I'm hoping that I can get another 10 years with Bart. I've had people ask me why I don't have him put to sleep. I guess they just don't understand. His favorite thing is being spun in our desk chair. He climbs in and my husband spins it and he loves it. Until the time comes where he doesn't want to do that anymore that will be when its time to say goodbye. Well lets keep in touch its nice finding someone not to far away. Take care

Hi Debbie and Bart,
I haven't been to the site for a little while - I hope things are going well for you. I've got Gus "stabilized" I think, for now anyway. I would like to start increasing his protein level, but I have not started with that yet. Gus is 9 years old, and I sure hope to have him for as long as I can. He is really my little snuggle bunny when he wants to be. I know he comes off to people that don't know him as a bit standoff-ish. Once you get to know him, you find out what a baby he is and how much he loves attention.
He has gone thru alot already, as he has had sub-total colectomy surgery, to relieve a condition called megacolon.
He would get very constipated and was not able to get much out, and he was straining when at the litter box. Their colon gets extremely packed and enlarges. I had him on medication for a year to help him poop, but then it seemed not to help as much anymore, and the next choice was surgery or to put him down - which I could not do. So he had the surgery, and he has been doing very well since. That's why I don't want to upset his routine too much by changing his food too drastically.
He is also a naughty eater, he eats the dog's food! I have a mechanical feeder for him because he is a chow hound, and will eat too much and then throw up. All of that puts me in a situation where I don't think that I can really put him on a diet of all canned food, as he will just go eat dog food whenever he wants to, or my other cat Muriel might eat all his canned food. It is not so easy to make a change like that when you have 2 cats and a dog. I found some high protein dry food (brand name Evo) that I plan to mix with his present food gradually while lowering his insulin - to hopefully get his dosage down. Maybe by some crazy alignment of the stars we could even get him to be free of insulin!!
Again - I hope things are going well for you.
Take care,
Lisa and Gus

Hi Lisa and Gus, I havent been on here much either. Poor Gus he has been through alot luckly he has a good mom to take care of him. what we do for our Cats. I found a pet sitter she lives here in Sauk City . She came over 2 weeks ago to met Bart and I showed her how I tested she has never done that but she has given shots. Then I had her come yesterday she wanted to me to show her again on how I test him then come over today to do the testing. It didn't go real well he was laying on the bed and she asked if she could get him. I said that was ok but when she got up close he hissed and went under the bed. That isn't really like him. She said that she just came from letting two dogs out and one of them jumped on her so maybe Bart smelled dog. Years ago we got a couch from a friend that had dogs and Bart wouldn't have anything to do with us for 2 weeks he stayed in the basement where we put our old couch. So today we are going to do something different her and I are going to sit on the floor and play with him so he he gets to know her a little bit then have her try and test him. We have until Wednesday to get this. And then if we cant get him to corporate I won't be going. What worries me is that he has bonded with me so much that he maynot let anyone do this. There is another thought that I had but its not a very good one. And thats to only give him one shot a day that way he will be high so then she doesn't have to test. There have been a few times that I've gotten home late for his shot and figure it would be better to just skip that one then having to adjust back to his schedule. And he usually is in the 400's for his next shot. But that is taking a risk also with his health. So hopefully this will work out and I will be able to go. But if I have to worry about him the whole time it won't be worth going for me. Well I have to go my husband just called and said that he hit a deer on the way to work. He is ok the deer didn't make it and some damage to the car. So he is on his way home. I'll be in touch and let you know how things go. Oh and my pet sitter has a website if you want to check it out it's called pawprint Ranch. Take care

Hi Debbie and Bart,

Sorry to hear abt the deer vs. car incident - hope that all came out o.k.
Sounds like it might take some time to get Bart used to another person. Maybe she could just come and spend some time w/ him and gain his trust first - perhaps feeding him some kind of tasty treat and then trying to handle him a bit, but not doing any injections yet.
I wouldn't want to miss injections as his BG will just be going up too high. As far as being late with the injection, I have been up to an hour or 1 1/2 hours late and still gave Gus his shot. I hope this works out for you!

Me and Gus are doing a curve today - so taking his glucose reading every 2 hours...not fun for either of us.
The other part is that it's looking higher than it should be. I will be reporting numbers to the vet tomorrow as long as I remember to do so, and see what we can do about his numbers. I would like to make some changes in his diet - more protein, less carbs.
He's such a good boy - very easy going. I know that he'd rather not do these ear pokes, but he's pretty tolerant.

I haven't been to the site in a while, lost my password...but I still think it's quite helpful. Would like to post a pic of Gus and Muriel.
We'll see if I can figure that out!
Take care,
Lisa and Gus
