OMG...scared the crap out of me! My building was evacuated but we are back in now. Damn phone wouldn't work! Kim, I was trying to reach you glad you are ok! I have family in Charlottesville I can't get through...I hope they are ok!
 
Cell phones are down and the internet is acting up...but, we are okay! Now if the Hurricane will just go away......

Good grief...I would be useless in a crisis! And the stupid cell phone not working was the most frustrating thing...couldn't reach my daughter! I finally got her & all is ok and my mom talked to family in Charlottesville & they are ok. Kim, I'll take the hurricane any day compared to that...at least you know what's coming! Nancy, I don't know how you stand it, but I guess like anything else you get used to it. They exacuated our building again so I got to come home early! Evidently someone saw a crack...who knows. I'm real thankful I wasn't in that stupid Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel or on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge! Yikes! nailbite_smile
 
No Hurricane.......hours and hours of wind and rain...darkness and the sound of trees falling and electric lines popping.....no hurricane!
 
Well, you are right...nothing would be good really! We really got it during Isabelle but we had a generator so we did ok. Only lost 1 treee but others around us were not so lucky.
 
Yikes an earthquake and a hurricane?

I'm glad everyone is ok.

We'll be crossing fingers, paws and eyes that the hurricane stays away from you.
 
Oh God Barbara! you NEVER get use to not having ground under your feet! I have been through four big ones and please God listen! I never want to again!!!

We had just moved to SF and two months later was the Loma-Prieta quake of 89 that was the scariest! People were trapped on freeways, the top freeway had fallen on the bottom .... it took a day to get them all out. The Bay Bridge collapse in a part .... a picture of cars trapped and one fallen ... yes, I know earthquakes.

I'm glad that you and your are fine.
 
fwiw, just know that BG numbers can be all wonky for a bit around an earthquake and it's aftershocks. there may even be aftershocks you don't feel but kitty does. Mousie can go either way around an earthquake. most of the time her BG will actually plummet if something related to Mother Nature happens, i.e. earthquakes, santa ana winds, etc.... throw in something man made though like the door bell ringing and it raises.

just something to keep in mind if numbers don't make sense today/tomorrow
 
Hmm....wonder if she could sense something...her #'s totally didn't make sense last night...but then that's typical Thumper!

That stupid hurricane seems to be heading right for either me or Kim. DH is going to gas up the truck & get gas for the generator tomorrow. I guess I better head for the grocery store. So....what do we do with insulin if we loose power for an extended time? If the generator doesn't keep the fridge going hopefully we will have ice but should it be protected somehow? Ugh.....I really don't wanna go here!
 
make up some extra ice or freeze some water in containers now, i.e. water bottles, jugs, plastic soda bottles.....find a cooler or something you can use as a makeshift cooler if need be. if power goes out, insulin should be ok in the fridge for a little bit but if fridge starts to warm up, use your back up ice/frozen containers to cool the fridge down some or put in your cooler/makeshift cooler

minimize how often the fridge is opened so as to keep it cooler longer. i want to say it should be ok in fridge for maybe a day or so depending on how warm it is there

and devise a backup plan possibly as far as another place to take the insulin if need be. for example, someone in levemir isg recently lost their power for a bit and they took their extra insulin and meds to work because it still had power.

Southern Maryland was no picnic. The building I work in is nearly 80 years old and severely overloaded - i.e. my Library on the 2nd floor with compact shelving which the manufacturer and installer made them sign a waiver before installing. And newly added 9 offices in the attic floor above the library. When the walls started vibrating loudly we all RAN out. Home and kitties fine. Building at work fine too, but took me hours to calm down.
Yeah, and now to gear up for Sunday arrival of hurricane. Yipee not - plastic over all shelving at work to protect books in case oversized windows blow out. Building right on the water front.

Did your insulin come in one of those small styrofoam "coolers" with ice packs? Any chance you saved it? It keeps in one of those for 24-36 hours when they mail it to you. It should work for that long if you still have it.

I don't know about ProZinc, but Levemir is fine at room temp once you start using it. I prefer to keep it refrigerated because it doesn't sting as much, but as long as it doesn't get.too hot it's fine. Did anyone get paperwork with their ProZinc? The vet had already used mine when they kept Cass overnight at dx & must have discarded the insert.
 
Carl, I got mine from the vet. DH has all the confidence in the world that the generator will be fine running the fridge. It was last time...for about 4 days that we were without electricity. (we were lucky) I just want to have a backup plan.

I do have the insert from my ProZinc. I have never read it :roll: Is there something specific you need for me to look at? I just checked & it says it should be kept between 36-46 degrees.
 
Must be kept in the fridge--40 degrees is desirable temp

You can go to a Truck Stop type store and get a small cooler...that plugs into the outlet in the car.

That does sound pretty scary! We didn't have any of that but I was glad for the afternoon off! :-D
