Balancing Megacolon and Diabetes-food

Hi, I saw an old post that NancyJH started. It's from 2021 but is closed out for new comments. Nancy mentioned her vet suggesting Royal Canin Fiber Response food for her megacolon cat who was newly diagnosed with diabetes.

My cat has been on this food for months and it has made a HUGE difference in his pooping. My vet is concerned with all of the carbs as we try to get his sugar numbers down.
  • I would love to know how Nancy's cat did on the fiber food, if she tried it vs her cat's numbers
  • I would love any input on fiber response food vs sugar numbers
Diabetes new to me and pooping is a priority so I'm hesitant to change food but we're at 7 units of Prozinc insulin and his numbers are just now coming down a little but it's not consistent.
Thank you in advance.

I’m sorry I don’t know how Nancy’s cat did on the Fiber Response. I know that the Facebook MegaColon group swears by the Fiber Response food. I know that a lot of people will disagree, but if it were my cat, I would not change the food if it keeps him pooping. It’s dangerous if not deadly for him to get blocked up. If you had a spreadsheet I would be able to comment on his ProZinc dose and make recommendations. What kind of nadirs are you getting on the 7 unit dose?

Thanks @Suzanne & Darcy. I don't want to change his food but vet said if we don't get his numbers down soon we'll have to consider it. Jimmy currently gets 7 units of Prozinc. We just increased to 7 four days ago and I know it can take some time for numbers to lower. He gets a few low numbers throughout the day around 340 or so; low numbers don't stay for long though, maybe a couple of hours at the most. That's low for him as we are still working to get his dosage correct.

Thanks for the link to Dr. Lisa's post @squeem3. However it was from 2011 and I think the thoughts have changed.

Oh wow. That is too high. I am sorry you are struggling with this! That food is almost 40 percent carbs.
