Bad Food = Fail For Duncan...?

We have two cats that look a lot alike, and I thought our other cat, Chamboard was munching away on his own food (using up what's left of the HC corn-based nasty Science Diet dry we have). I don't know how long Duncan was sitting there munching away but it was a good couple minutes before I realized it was him. :cry: grumpy_cat grr_red

I checked his BG hours after and it was out of normal range, but not by a ton. But he's had very LC wet since then and he is still climbing... SS says it all. So, If he is still climbing at shot time this morning I am going to give .5u

I have hope that we can control him with food, but we may always need insulin on hand for if he gets into some carbs. And he is a major carb-a-holic too. He will go digging in garbage to get pizza crust, rice, popcorn... basically anything white and carby.

So, now we see how long it takes this bad food to clear his system. He's had 3 meals of wet LC since the bad food incident.

I won't worry about it just yet, it may take up to 24 hours for the carbs to clear his system, just keep an eye on him and if he doesn't come down by shot time you may want to give him a token dose to help clear the carbs.

He may still be OTJ, but remember OTJ means diet controlled, so anytime he gets into high carb food he is going to shoot up again. If at all possible you are going to want to get all your cats on his diet to prevent accidents like this one. Once a diabetic, always a diabetic even when in remission.

Maxwell did something similiar to me when he had been OTJ for about 6 months, we had friends over for a big spaghetti dinner, and since Maxwell never jumps on the counters I thought it was fairly safe to leave the pasta pan sitting on the stove so people could go back for seconds if they liked...well I hear a noise in the kitchen, go in there is Maxwell whiskers deep in the pasta happily munching away! :roll: He shot up for about 24 hours and then went right back down as the carbs cleared his system.

Musette just pulled a similiar stunt just a couple days ago when I was baby-sitting my grandson, I was freezing the leftover honey baked ham, I turned my back for about 30 seconds to grab some more freezer bags. She leapt on the counter and proceeded to help herself to the ham....that night she was in the 400s!!! But by the next morning back to the 200s and then this morning she was back to the 100s.

Accidents do happen, so don't beat yourself up, just keep watching him and personally I wouldn't shoot unless he goes over 250, otherwise I would just keep monitoring him and see if he drops back to normal numbers again.

He is coming back down on his own so I am just going to watch. His last check wasn't completely in the normal range but very close.
