Since starting Theo on the wet food his breath is much worse than it was. Since a lot of our love time involves leaning forehead to forehead against each other and he's a mouth breather... Well, I'm not saying it's a strain on our relationship, but it's pretty noticeable.

Does anyone have advice for ways to perk things up that won't mess up the rest of his health?

Hi Arienna,

Have you ever had Theo`s teeth checked at the vet? He might need a good dental. My cat Sam has the same problem and he needs a dental really bad, I am just trying to muster the money for it? He likes to get in my face and kiss me so I know what you mean.

Henry is the same way and loves getting all up in my grill. Sometimes it's not a problem, but if he's just eaten...WOWZA! I just try to avoid kitty kisses directly after he eats.

It is possible to brush your cat's teeth. Dr Pierson discusses it over on Cat Info.

Also, it can help to feed them (mostly) raw chicken wings, necks, of gizzards. Give them a quick dip in boiling water to kill off any surface bacteria, but do not cook them (cooked bone is hazardous).

Thanks BJM. Can you tell me why cooked bone is hazardous? We usually boil a whole chicken, bones and all, when we're making chicken stock.

If the bones congeal and liquify, then it's not a problem. Just be sure to strain it so any bones that didn't dissolve won't still be in it.

Splintery bones may perforate intestines.

Note: if you have a renal cat, bones contain phosphorus, which you may need to decrease in the diet to preserve remaining kidney function.

We have 4 cats and brushing all their teeth is quite difficult, as we have tried. Our vet recommended a mouthwash for cats you can get on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004ULZ2W6/?tag=felinediabetesfdmb-20

One quick squirt in their mouth in the morning and evening. It helps keep plaque and tarter from building up and their breath is much fresher as well.

Our cats aren't crazy about it (naturally) but it works very well and the bottle lasts a very long time.
