When we started this ordeal back in mid-April, I was mostly concerned that Alex wouldn't let us check BG levels with ear pokes and give shots. For about a month now, he has tolerated things pretty well, but the last couple of days, he has been hissing and growling and attacking me at shot time.

This morning, he actually bit me and drew a little blood.
I know I didn't get all the insulin in, but I'm hoping some of it did.

I was using u40's 29 gauge needles, but decided this morning to switch over to u100s,31 guage with 5/16 inch needle.

The ONLY place he will let us shoot is his neck even though I've read that that may not be the best location due to poorer circulation. I'm not even sure it's the shot itself or just the routine of messing with him twice a day and every day.

Remember, this is the cat that can't go to an office vet anymore, but has a home vet. And he had to be sedated at home to get the blood for testing.

Oh, and I tried to shoot him while eating, but that was the worst scenrio. Now we try to do it before he eats while he has his back legs on my lap and his front legs on the kitchen table. This is a good position to poke his ears and scracth behind his ears--trying to relax him enough for his shot. It's just not as effective as it was in the beginning.

Be patient and see what kind of replies you get, Ginny. This was not an issue for us, but I know other people have had creative solutions with difficult cats. Maybe change your title to Fighting the shot - help!

Well, Lisa, no one has ever asked that before. I just checked the box and my hubby bought 26 gauge

however, I haven't found any finer than 29 gauge in the pharmacies.

Try Walmart. The Relion brand lancets come in both a 30 & 33 guage. The lancets that you are using may be to thick and painful to Alex.
