Getting her into the carrier was a bit of a struggle, and she hissed. Oh, boy did she hiss. Twice. In the carrier. She was quiet after that point once I started to carry her to the door.

Drove to the vet's. Left a bit earlier, but that's ok as I wanted to be early than late. Got there, and I think we only sat down for about 5 minutes when one of the vet techs called us in. Dr. B saw us this time, even though the scheduled vet was Dr. N. That's fine. Dr. B was the one that took care of Daisy for us. She looked at it, and performed a fine needle aspirate on it. She told me that it was good news, and not bad. Turned out to be pus, which was an infection. She drained it, as much as she could from it, and it shrank, and it looked a whole sight better than it did. She also did a weight check on Blackie. 11 lbs., which is about the same here, only they have a baby scale, and I have a pet scale. Blackie was also given a Convenia injection. Dr. B asked me if she would accept pills, and I simply told her that I've never had to pill her before, so I wouldn't know. Hence the reason for the shot. I was hesitant about giving it, and asked Dr. B if she felt confident in it, and she said she did. Her temperature was also taken. 99 something. Normal. I'm sure Blackie felt like clawing the crap out of her after she inserted that thermometer. Another appointment was scheduled for Monday morning to remove the remainder of the lump, which is now rather small.

I asked Dr. B about not shooting the insulin and not feeding on Monday. She told me to continue to give Blackie the required dose, but to cut the food amounts by 1/2. She wants Blackie to still have something in her system before surgery. I'm to get her there between 7:30 and 8:00 a.m. Dr. B asked me if Blackie would lick sutures. I don't know, and I don't remember. I told Dr. B as much as I don't remember what she did when she was fixed almost 13 years ago. Dr. B suggested that if Blackie started to lick it, then I could get an E-collar to keep her from licking it. I may just get one just because.

I explained to Dr. B that the lump started out looking like what I thought was a mole, and then it ballooned from there. She may have licked it if that mole-ish thing was open, and perhaps some germs got under her skin. It wasn't attached to anything. It's sub-q just under the skin. Dr. B told me that it'll be a quick fix, and it wouldn't take long to do at all.

So, that's where we stand. Yeah, I know I was worrying probably for nothing. With our recent history of losing so many cats, how could one not worry?

Please keep an eye on Blackie today. Convenia is an antibiotic that Dr. Lisa has written about and has reservations about it's use. Because it's an AB that lasts at least 2 weeks, if your cat is allergic to it, once it's in, there's not much you can do. It is used to treat skin infections, which it sounds like this is. FWIW, I won't let my vet give my kitties Convenia.

Fantastic result,am so pleased for you,you deserve a break. Try to have a relaxed weekend.

Good news on the lump today! :YMHUG: My Buster (GA - heart issue) had a tail lump (cyst) removed and they only had to use a local anesthetic. It depends on how good the kitty is at the vet, sounds like Blackie might be a handful. My civie Theo is in the vet getting a lump removed today and is getting anesthetic, but that's because he's also getting a dental. You vet will tell you what they expect regarding food and insulin for the morning of.

Having a collar around to prevent licking is a good idea - I was lucky that Buster wasn't a licker.

Glad it was something easily treatable. I know all kinds of scary things run through your head in these situations, so it's good you got in and got it taken care of. I'm surprised they want food in her system. I assume they won't be putting her completely under, then?

It might be good to know if you can pill her, just in case you have to. You might pick up some pill pockets and give her one - see if she likes them and eats them quickly. Harvey inhales them. Sasha eats them slowly but still manages to eat the pill, and Minka either eats the pocket and leaves the pill or disdains them altogether, so ECID!

Sending good vines that the shot causes no problems and Blackie has a good rest of the day!

That's great! We love pill pockets here, and if those don't work, liquid meds are pretty easy to get in, even though they usually taste nasty. I hope you can enjoy a relaxing weekend now...what a relief!

Angela, you must be so relieved. I'm glad that the news is positive and hope that all will proceed smoothly from here. I'm very glad that you brought Blackie to the vet today, rather than waiting until next week.

Sending lots of healing vines,

Hugs, scritches,

Ella & Rusty

Sienne: Thank you for your concern, and the vet knows of my concerns with Convenia. It was a skin infection as she drew 2 syringes of pus out of the lump, and confirmed that it was a skin infection. Hence she suggested the AB for it. I think the old vet simply gave it to the others as an AB, and treated it as such without knowing a lot about it, and didn't think anything of it. You know I'll be keeping an eye on Blackie, and I'll keep everyone posted.

Tricia: Yes, I'm glad that it was something easily treatable, too. It'll be interesting to see how the next week plays out. Good thing the surgery's scheduled on Monday as I have a dental appointment on Thursday. She was already given the Convenia shot, so no pills are needed.

Wendy: Yes, and thank you. I'm sending you tons of positive thoughts, and tons of healing vines for Theo, and I wish for him to make a full and speedy recovery.

Diane: Thank you. I'm glad that I listened to my gut instinct to take her in today, and not Monday. At least I can be rest assured that it's something minor that can be dealt with quickly. Getting her back into the carrier will be a bit of a struggle, however, I'll manage.

Ella: Thank you. I'm glad that I listened to my gut, also. My mother told me, "Don't put off tomorrow what you can do today". Now I feel like napping, but I have to do the grocery shopping still. Was going to vacuum, but that may have to wait until tomorrow, or Sunday.

Amy: Thank you. We did the shot instead, and I did question the vet to confirm that she felt it was safe. And she thought so. In fact, I think she may have injected the AB where the infection was, and not injected it anywhere else under the skin. I'll be keeping a close eye on Blackie per Sienne's request. I always keep a close on her anyway.

Great news Angela! Bet Blackie is glad to be back home and not having anyone bothering her private places :-D
Sending positive vines for Monday's surgery - Hope you can get her into the carrier without too much fuss~
Enjoy the rest of your weekend :-D

Angela that is great news! dancing_cat

I am so glad Blackie is okay! whew! I have a couple kitties who really hate the carrier to so getting to the Vet 35 miles is a long drive of howling!

Hey GREAT news Angela..........and BETTER to worry about nothing then to not worry about something. No such thing as worrying too much in my books. Good on you for getting this looked after.

You must be so relieved and will be more after the surgery. As to whether you can pill Blackie, I would buy size 3 gel capsules. I put the pills in them and chase with baby food. It's good to try this out before you actually need to pill them. I had to learn when Tiffany got sick and it is so much harder then. I personally prefer pills to long lasting injections.

Happy to hear that it's a skin infection. Interesting to think about that diabetic cats, and people too, often suffer from skin infections..

About the Covenia..I also will not allow a vet to give it. It does take a long time to clear from the system and if the cat turned out to be allergic to it, nothing anyone can do about it, so the cat could die..

Giving Zobaline might help with skin/fur conditions. With diabetes, there is always the possibility of malabsorbtion of vitamin b-12.

I already give Blackie the Zobaline tablets once a day, usually with her PMPS meals.

I just got back from shopping, and checked Blackie's BG to see if she rose any further from the last test, and she didn't. Upon checking the bump, though, it looks like it's starting to swell up again. I just have to wait 2 days, and then she'll be at the vet's on Monday morning to get this taken care of once and for all.
