Back from vacation - all went well, but HIGH this morning??

Well, all was well during my vacation - coming back was rough. I got pretty used to the "all inclusive" thing... so actually having to find and COOK food when I'm hungry was a real reality check. :o

As you can see from Tink's SS, I had started testing less frequently prior to my trip. His number are steadily in the low 100s so I figured poking him every 2 days wasn't necessary. We did not do any testing while I was gone.

I tested the day after I got back (5/19) and he was at 127. Higher, but not alarming. I knew he was a little irked at me as he took awhile to acknowledge that I was home, just giving me the evil eye for the first few hours. I tested again this morning and it read 173!!!! I meant to test an hour after I fed him, but forgot. I'll test when I get home tonight and if still high, I'll resume daily testing till I figure it out. He DID sneak one lick out of my used cereal bowl last night (so basically got a lick of the super sweet milk left over from my cocoa pebbles). Could have certainly affected his bg... but I dont know that it would have affected it THAT much, since that was about 9hrs prior to his test.

It definitely has me concerned. Additionally, he's at 13.2 lb. as of last night. Fatty! I would like to see him at 12. He's only getting 1/2 of a 12oz can of Wellness each day, split into 4 meals. However, at least one of those meals - sometimes two, he bullies another cat out of the way and finishes his food if we dont watch him like a hawk. So I'm being extra diligent to make sure this stops, as my other cat does not need to loose any more weight.

Anyway... appreciate any insights on today's 173. Hoping it was just a fluke. Probably should have retested, but I'd already stabbed him 3 times (one ear has gotten pretty laden with scar tissue - plus he needs a shave!).

I really wouldn't worry about a stray 173 test. I think I would test daily for a few days to see if that's a trend or if it was a fluke. If it's a trend, stress from you being away and higher weight could be the culprit.

My thought would be perhaps he is stressing over the diet? Maybe He feels that he needs more than he is getting?

Re: Back from vacation - all went well, but HIGH this mornin

You might try adding a bit of water to increase the volume some and help him feel more full.

Re: Back from vacation - all went well, but HIGH this mornin

Is Tink feeling ok? I ask, because my Wink gave me a little high BG blip a couple of weeks ago. I could tell that he wasn't feeling quite himself. It took about a week, but he's back in normal numbers, usually 60-90 now.

Re: Back from vacation - all went well, but HIGH this mornin

Thanks all... numbers have been ok since, so hopefully it was just a fluke.

He seems to be feeling fine. He DOES seem to think he's hungry pretty much all the time - but that's been going on since I went to the 4x/day feedings with him, which we had to do to regulate his bg. You can tell he's looking around for more food - and he'll steal food from the others if given the chance (they all eat the Wellness GF, so no risk other than overeating).

I like the water idea... though I wonder if he'll "fall for it". He's VERY particular about his food - but I'll definitely try it.

Other than the water thing... any ideas on how to get his weight down a little? Given that he already thinks I'm starving him - and that I'm feeding FAR less than the mfg recommends (the can says an ounce per day per pound of body weight - that would be a full can a day - he's getting half a can) I'm reluctant to reduce his food. He's not the most active cat in the world at age 11, but he does run and play with the other cats several times a day.

He used to be a 14lb cat and dropped to just over 10 during his DKA/vet stay. I liked his weight at 12 - not too skinny but not plump. At 13, he's definitely back to plump. I just dont see how he's gaining weight on 6oz of food a day!

Start with just 1 teaspoon stirred in well.
Then 2 teasoons.
Then 3.
Etc.

New HIGH 193 - and eye goop?

At what point to I need to freak out?? :/

Tink has been testing higher since I got back from vacation (which is why I'm continuing this thread rather than posting new), but aside from the stray 173 on 5/21, I wasn't too concerned.

This morning he had some milky white eye discharge. His ears were very cold, but that's pretty typical. He tested a 193!!! I immediately retested, using the other ear, and got 160. With such a huge difference, I felt horrible, but poked again and got 164. Felt better about the 160/164 than the 193... but still! I tested him again about 30-45 min after he got his breakfast (1.5 oz of Wellness GF) and he had only gone up to 205, so I came to work.

I'm guessing the minor eye issue may have his numbers elevated? But being as this is his first illness of any sort since diagnosis... I'm not sure if it requires he be seen by a vet or not. I would not normally take a cat to the vet over a little white eye goop. But this is new territory. What do you all think?

Re: Back from vacation - all went well, but HIGH this mornin

I hate to say it but he might be getting ready to drop out of remission! It could be caused by his possible eye infection, any infection will cause higher glucose readings so I would get him to the vet and get that seen ASAP. nailbite_smile

Re: Back from vacation - all went well, but HIGH this mornin

OH I hope not!!! nailbite_smile

Ok. I'll call for an appt. I have yet to find a vet I LIKE around here, but I keep hearing good things about one in the next town over... so I'll call them. I've not had him seen since diagnosis as I felt like the stress of it just wasn't worth it when nothing is going wrong - and the vet that diagnosed him wasn't going to be any help anyway. But I dont want to wait too long and wind up with another HUGE vet bill, or worse. :(

Are there medications and such to watch out for with diabetics? I would imagine the liquid antibiotics (amoxi, and can't remember the other) have a lot of sugar, judging by the smell of them. I would LOVE to find a vet that KNOWS these things (and isn't on Hill's payroll) so I dont feel like I have to be second guessing everything I'm told.

Re: Back from vacation - all went well, but HIGH this mornin

Well, wish me luck. This new vet SAYS their docs are all knowledgable about FD (they even had some talk about it on their recording) AND as an added bonus... they do goats (which I also have - but no vets seem to know what to do with them either!). To complete the awesomeness trifecta, they have evening appointments and are open 7 days a week! :) Fingers and paws (and hooves?) crossed!!!!

Yes, remember... No steroids or oral meds with sugar - remind your vet whenever giving you any medication. Always double check. confused_cat
