My bouncy bouncy guy! We have a bit of an emergency here right now. Looks like Bacardi’s BG has gone craycray again. Feeding him high carb meal now (sheba pouch), he’s lapping it up. So, I guess - another test in 15 minutes to see how he’s going (if he drops I should give some glucose?), and a dose reduction to 1.25 tomorrow?

Kate, do you have honey or Karo syrup there?

Here's some info that is useful:
If your cat is testing in low numbers and you are not getting a quick response to your post, there are several things you need to do. (Low numbers are under 50mg/dL or 2.8 mmol/L.)
Depending on how carbohydrate sensitive your cat is, feed approximately a teaspoon or less of gravy from high carb food or high carb food only. (If you have a cat with GI issues, using a couple of drops of syrup plus low carb food is an alternative.)
Test again in 15 – 20 min. Depending on the numbers, give more HC food.
Repeat the above steps every 15 – 20 min. until your cat tests in the 50 mg/dL (2.8 mmol/L) or above range for 2 consecutive tests. Continue to feed in small amounts to keep numbers in a safe range.
Test in 30 - 40 min. and repeat the test and feed process until there are 2 consecutive tests where numbers are stable or rising.
Test in an hour and follow the same steps.
DO NOT become complacent. If number have risen after one or two tests, it’s important to continue testing. Numbers may bobble up and down as the HC food and/or Karo wear off. DO NOT get one test where your cat has risen from low numbers into the 50s and go to sleep or leave the house. You are putting your cat in a risky situation. When in doubt, leave HC food out.
Don't worry about dosage right now, just get his BG up and resolve this hypo event. That's what is important.

I agree with the glucose since he needs a quick pick me up. He's already had HC and you are almost halfway through the cycle.

Just read that and gave him a teaspoon of glucose (sneaked it in his meal;) - he ate it. I am going to test in 10 minites to see. Damn, now I understand what a pyjama party is. I should go change not to spoil it.

PS he’s not having almost any symptoms, just hunger. So hopefully we’ll be good, I just feel safer with you online! thanks

Well on Caninsulin his hypos were scary! He’s had symptoms even with BG of 4 once.

I was honestly surprised with this reading, did not expect it at all! He’s licking himself clean in his favourite chair right now, like “what’s the fuss all about”?

Ok we’re at 113mg/dl 20 minutes later. I might have fed him a bit less maybe.

Edit: it was feeding time anyway, so he got his usual amount, but different food

Good job!!!! Thanks so much for the update. Keep a close eye on Mr. Fuzzy Britches, and give him a hug for me. Don't stop testing, however. I hope this crisis is over, and now you can post for dosing help in the Caninsulin forum.

So glad so see that he came up! It's about mid way through the cycle, so the insulin should be starting to wan. But, still get another test in 20 minutes from that last reading of 113 as when the higher carb food wears off, the number can drop again. You want to get two more test in 30 mins apart from the last test to make sure he is out of the woods.

He has earned a reduction so the AM dose will be 1.25, congrats on that!!

Thank you for the nice words! I’ll certainly keep an eye on him, testing again in 5 minutes and if it’s OK, setting up my alarm to wake me up in an hour (it’s 1AM here damn it).

We’re on Lantus now, so I’ll re-read the TR protocol instructions on lowering the dose tomorrow

Oh, yes, sorry, I didn't read through properly. You did good, kiddo. Idjit only had one just barely hypo and I was frantic. Hats off to you for your quick reaction and great care of Bacardi. He's precious.

Oh believe me, I almost had a heart attack when I saw Bacardi's first (and also the last I've witnessed) hypo with symptoms, when he felt terrible but did not want us to even come close to him. The next day I found this forum, started testing, switched him to Lantus and here I am. Well, I am still nervous, but you guys are being a huge help.

I've done another test:
36 @+5
113 @+5:20
200 @+5:40

stop rising Bacardi! Naughty cat, isn't he?
