Aztec turns 20 today! (10+ yrs w/diabetes)

I don't post much here lately but thought I'd give an update on my long-time diabetic kitty, Aztec, in case it offers some encouragement to others just starting out. Aztec is celebrating his 20th birthday today!! He's actually been diabetic for more of his life than he hasn't: over 10 years. Still gets insulin twice a day (just a 1/2 unit of Levemir), and I still test his blood sugar at least twice a day. That adds up to a heckuva lot of shots and ear pricks over the years! He also has CKD now so regular subQ fluids have been added to the regime. He's a happy kitty though. Insists on getting his morning cuddles from my husband everyday (hubby is the *best* cuddler), and got to go outside just now to sniff all the interesting smells and nibble some grass and lie in the shade for a while. It was a good day.

:RAHCAT Julie, what a wonderful post to read and to not only know Aztec is still with you but is celebrating his 20th today. Happy 20th to Aztec with so many good wishes for more years with your beloved boy. Been a long time since I've seen you on the board, years go by so fast, but such happy news that I am so glad you posted. Please give Aztec some hugs and kisses from me, okay?
 
I hope the birthday boy (and his 2-legged servants) had a wonderful time celebrating his 20th birthday. And congratulations on being such great cat parents. Give Aztec some pets or treats from me.

Happy Birthday to Aztec and thank you for posting this. It really is encouraging to me. My cat is 10 and was just diagnosed. Seeing a post like this gives me even more hope for his future. :-D

This website and forum is an incredible resource....it's mind-boggling to think of how many cats have benefitted from the collective wisdom passed down here over the years. It most certainly helped Aztec, from the bg testing tips to diet info and everything in between (and special thanks to Steve and Jock and their pioneering use of Levemir!). I'm forever grateful to all of you for giving so much of your time, offering encouragement and advice and a shoulder to cry on.

Thanks so much for posting this! My cat was diagnosed about 6 months ago, and she's around 10 years old, so it's really encouraging to know that a cat can do well even when on insulin for the long term.
 
Thank you so much for sharing this with us! At this point, Michelangelo has also been diabetic for longer than not (which isn't saying much because he was diagnosed at 6 months old :lol: ). I keep telling everyone that my plan is to make Michelangelo into the poster kitten of Feline Diabetes to show that YES! It is manageable and NO! It's not a death sentence and have him live to the ripe old age of 100 (because by then, they'll have figured out how to make kitties live longer ;-) ). :thumbup Hearing Aztec's story really warms my heart. :-D
