I am looking for Australian members of the Forum that are able to advise me which canned foods available in Australia are suitable for diabetic cats

I sent a PM to Little Boy's mom.......she lives in Melbourne.....she posts under Anyname.....and I'm sure she will be in touch with you.

There have been a few other Australians post here this year. It think Mel&Fatty and JC & Balki are from Australia. Allie & Myrtle (GA) is from New Zealand.

send me a PM if you would like to. Another friend I met on this site (lives on a sheep station) wrote to the makers of Fancy Feast. It's safe - if I can find that email I can send it to you. She got a long reply back from the people who make it (can't remember what they are called). She got details about every variety - what percentage is carb etc. I have an excellent 'ground rabbit supplier' n melbourne (my kitty has allergies) so can't give him tinned food.

Success! Natures Gift wet varieties come in at under 2% carbohydrates the manufacturer said:

"You are correct in saying that our cat food is low in carbohydrates. Wheat based products are not metabolised well by cats so we avoid using them where possible.

Our 100g trays are made with 100% real meat so there is a high protein level (which keeps them feeling fuller for longer). There are no wheats/cereals in the ingredients so consequently the carbohydrate percentages for all variants are less than 2%."

Is is this? http://www.naturesgift.com.au/cat-wet-food It looks pretty good except for the ones in gravy. Gravy based foods tend to be over the ideal 10% carbs for diabetic cats.[/quote]

Yes this is the one I've just been to the supermarket to stock up and noticed that some were in gravy and wondered about that. Is the reason gravy is usually no good because it is wheat based though? Natures Gift has specifically said that none of their wet foods contain wheat or other cereal products.

I think I might quiz them about that again though just to be sure.

Especially since (wonderful news) it looks like my Vyktorpuss is responding to a change in diet alone. I just took his BG and he got an 8.3 (149.4 in american speak) - very excited!!

Have also now found ZiwiPeak. This is manufactured in NZ and not widely stocked in Aus (one distributor in WA). It is pricey ($3.90 for 170g can) but it seems to be hands down the best cat food I have ever seen. It has negligible carbohydrates and only ingredients cats were meant to eat - meat including organ, green mussels (good for arthritis), vitamins and minerals. The meat composition is 66% and is human grade.

Generally, the gravy made by thickening the broth with cornstarch. You may need to look for corn products or ask what the "gelling" agent is. It's quite possible it's something that's carb neutral since the overall carb level is so low. Also, you will want to track down some high carb foods to have on hand, as well. You may need high carb to help with steering the curve is numbers are low.

I do remember Andrew & Mim mentioning using Ziwi Peak.

update for australians

The 'gelling agent' in Natures Gift is guar gum - a plant extract so no problems there.

Ultimates is also another option for LC, their gelling agent is also plant based (carageen - sp?)- but all their varieties seem to contain fish so not good for everyday

I've been using Fancy Feast Roasted Chicken, it seems alright, so i'm happy to hear others in the range are good. When you open the can, it looks like mainly roasted chicken with nothing much else.

Most days i open a can of Whiskas loafstyle and a can of NaturesGift.
They've thrived on those two brands.

I wrote to NaturesGift and got this reply the other day:

Marily, FancyFeast has so many varieties, I'd love to see that info from them too as I wonder about some of the other flavours beyond roasted chicken Royale.

That's worth knowing... if only they had a non fish version. Strangely, Ak used to eat ultimates most nights, before the vet put him on dried food. And then he went diabetic.

Read the ingredients on the Australian versions of FF they nearly all contain cereal (maybe not the pate varieties, those I haven't been able to find yet) - cereals are not recommended for any cat let alone a diabetic cat.

I wouldn't trust the email from FF I contacted them several times and got different answers everytime I did - which were different again to the answers Marilyn's friend got. One clear example of where that email is wrong is where they advise that FF grilled varieties have only 3.8% carbs - this is the variety that people use as a high carb option when BG needs to be lifted! I believe the carb content is more like 18%

The cereal listed as an ingredient is enough to make sure I won't feed it to Vyktor.
