A friend has a cat with arthritis and her vet said it would be OK to give him 1/2 baby aspirin once every 4 days.

I thought aspirin was a real no no for cats!!

Have given my cats 1/2 baby aspirin twice a day many times. In fact, after minor surgery my vet suggested baby aspirin for pain. And because you can crush it and put it on top of their food, there is no "pilling" problem. Tylenol is a no-no however.

Maggie got either .5 a baby aspirin every day or 1 every other day for her heart problems. (it was easier to pill a whole one - they are tiny.) Cats take longer to clear the med, so you have to be extra careful. Use it only on vet's advice.

Bob takes Cosequin as a preventative measure. The vet worried about it since he carried around so much extra weight for too many years. He used to weigh 22 lbs and he still looks chunky at 14. It comes in capsule form that I just sprinkle over his food.

I have also seen people mention Dasaquin (sp?) and Adaquan in arthritis threads.

Aspirin is NOT safe for cats, but there are some times when vets will use it such as heart conditions to prevent blood clots. I would NEVER give a cat one pill a day. The specialist vet for Merlyn had me dissolve a baby aspirin in water so that I could give less of it every day, rather than cut a pill up so small.

I would never use aspirin for arthritis in a cat given the dangers aspirin poses to cats and the availability of other pain relief /tx options for cats now.

My Fuji takes 1/4 of an 81mg baby aspirin once every other day, because of his defective heart. like Lisa said, his cardiologist prescribed it to try to ward off a blood clot.

for arthritis pain we've used metacam in the past (it has a black box warning though now for cats and it really does have to be used with care so in all honesty, I probably wouldn't choose this one either) and Dasuquin. in all honesty I've never seen anyone mention giving aspirin for arthritis pain before, to a cat.
