I am asking for strong prayers for both my husband and Tiger tonight. My husband called me tonight. In the last two days Tiger's ear has swelled back up. He has enough antibiotics for another 7 day course, I told him to start giving Tiger the antibiotics and to put the collar back on him and no matter how many times he takes it off to keep putting it back on. Problem is damage is already done. I did my best to keep the collar on Tiger but I was not around him all the time and I told Jake that Tiger had to quit shaking his head so violently or the ear would swell back up. I am going to call the Humane Society tomorrow and see if they are willing to help out with a trip back to the vet. I am at a loss what else to do. I have read up on it and it seems if the ear doesn't want to heal it will just keep swelling back up no matter how many times they drain it if Tiger keeps shaking his head. Only keeping the collar on will keep him from shaking his head so much and tugging at his ear. He doesn't scratch it, just tugs on it and shakes his head so hard. I know I am rambling. Just so much at a loss. He seemed to be doing okay, except for tugging and shaking head and just over last two days it all went bad.

Please say prayers for both Tiger and my husband Jake, he is not doing well with stressing about Tiger and I am not sure it will make any difference if we go back to vet or not. The vet said it was a 50/50 shot on whether or not the ear would reswell. I just had hoped it would not happen this fast again.

Did/does Tiger have a hematoma in the ear?
If not completely healed head shaking can cause it recur.
Was it previously drained?

yes, it was drained, and yes, that is what has happened. I knew that it was a 50/50 that the ear would swell again, the vet said was a big possibility if Tiger would not stop shaking his head, he shakes so violently that the collar comes off constantly. We are going to try another round of antibiotics and an inflammatory and see if that helps.

My Gray Ghost had his ear drained and stitched to help minimise it happening again. The ear did look strange afterwards but it did not recur.

I did just have an idea regarding the shaking...could you take an old large sock and cut one little slit (for the healthy ear and use the tune to hold the poorly eat in place. That way the shaking will be less. Tiger may not like it but it will at least stop the free shaking of the ear

I can imagine how stressed your DH is trying to manage the situation.
Haematomas filling up again is not uncommon.
What sort of collar do you have for him? Is it a soft or hard collar?
Sending a plane load of vines for a good outcome.

@Bron and Sheba I am so sorry I missed your post until today, so much going on right now. It is a soft collar, but Tiger pretty much refuses to wear it. He went back to the vet and the vet said while it looks frightening it is really not life threatening and we should just keep an eye on it. In time it should reabsorb. We are going to play the wait and see game for a few days and then go from there. Thank everyone for your support, it does help.

It is very hard to manage things like that Cathie. Cats are not always the most cooperative of creatures when we want to help them. And I am sure those collars are pretty uncomfortable.
Yes I agree it should reabsorb........well that is what human ears do. Just a matter of time. Glad the vet was so reassuring.
