I know some of you have cats with ibd. A friend of mine has a cat with this and it has been struggling recently with weight loss. Can anyone give some advice or suggestions I could pass on to her? The cat is on prednisone.

Thanks

In my exsperience, pumpkin helped with motility and my vet prescribed a med cisapride, to help motility, but she had about 10 doses and we started pumpkin and she has had the best poops of her life. The gabapentin helps with inflammation and pain. Good luck yo your friend and their furbaby. :)

Thank you I'll pass that on to her. What foods do you feed?

Smoky is on budesonide which is supposed to be a gentler steroid than prednisone. I give it to him orally, I know how your friend feels as it is taking my kitty a long time to put weight back on.

Saccharomyces Boulardi probiotic has done well with Chuck's very mild IBD. We stopped the pumpkin and he still has formed stool. S. Boulardi is suppose to have an anti-inflammatory effect. www.ibdkitties.net is a great website FULL of info.

I think the S boulardi with MOS is the preferred but most cats don't like the bitter taste and need to be pilled with it. I haven't tried the one with MOS in it. I use just the plain one. I ordered from walmart.com.

Taking the steroid was what gave phoebe diabetes. But it can do good. It's an option if she gets worse. And then you have to manage the insulin to fit with the steroids.

I'm dealing with this now with Leo. I had just posted a thread regarding the use of ranitidine used for motility problems in IBD cats. It's been giving Leo the runs unfortunately. Since he has been off insulin for a couple weeks now his specialist was trying to not put him on budesonide in fear of his glucose going back to diabetic levels. The probiotic sounds interesting. I was using Dr. Mercola's probiotic for cats but stopped so maybe I will start this up again. Does anyone know if the budesonide always increases glucose? Leo's IBD is mild but he is still losing some weight and it seems so hard to get the weight back. Pepcid helped with acid build up and is sometimes recommended for IBD kitties. Eating small frequent meals also helps.

The budesonide doesn't seem to increase Smokys glucose all that much. However, every cat is different. It is true that I have to dose around the steroid. Smoky has been taking it daily for about two months now. He has been having very good BG numbers over the last month.

My friends cat isn't currently diabetic, knock on wood

Wow. That is good news. I had heard that IBD was often found in kitties with FD.
I found the advice others gave you to be quite helpful with Smoky and his issues with his IBD.
