Hi All,

So it was a busy weekend and I wasn't able to get as many readings as I would have liked to, but i think we still made a little bit of progress. Today is the first day that Ashley was out of the red zone all day. It has been about 5 days since she's been completely off of the dry food. I'm pretty sure that I'm still seeing trace ketones in her urine. Any advice on what else to do about that? I've been freshening her water throughout the day and adding lots of water to her food.

I also received my micro dose syringes, so any advice on what the dosage should be in those?

Thanks,
Sheryl & Ashley

Re: Weekend Update on Ashley

I used to have trouble being sure about trace ketones (using the urine strips). One suggestion that helped me was to compare the strip not only to the bottle, but also to an unused strip. It was easier to tell if the color had changed. If you really are seeing any ketones I think it is very important you check it out with your vet.
Good job eliminating the dry food, and testing! I looked at your spreadsheet (congrats on that too!) and I don't usually give dosing advice, but here we usually go up by .2 increments, and it looks like your numbers are high enough to do an increase.

Re: Weekend Update on Ashley

I know that trace ketones can help get flushed out with lots of water, food, and of course insulin. Is Ashley doing well on her new wet food? I, too, think that you've held long enough at 1u with minimal progress. I would think that her system should have adjusted to the low-carb diet by now. So I agree with Judy that a small increase might be in order. But let's wait and hear what a veteran or 2 have to say.

Have you printed off the u-40 to u-100 conversion chart for the syringes? It's really easy to use. Just be sure to double-check which syringe you're holding before drawing up the dose to avoid any mistakes!

Re: Weekend Update on Ashley

wonderful advice so far...love the trick of comparing to another strip rather than the bottle.
def. time to go up. you can do .2, i would do .4 but that's becuase i just would'nt be able to stand it any longer and your #'s are high enough.
the U100 syringes take 2.5 units to equal 1unit right....so 3.5 units on u100 would equal 1.4U.
each 1/2 line on the u100 = .2 units

Re: Weekend Update on Ashley

Hi Sheryl & Ashley,

Great job getting your spreadsheet up and switching her diet to low carb wet and getting the testing in, now you are all set to figure out her perfect dose.

I agree it's time to increase, we normally go by .2u. Although your ss says you fed high carb because you ran out of low carb so the .2u probably won't do anything until the carbs get out of her system.

Need Quick Advice for Ashley

Hi All,

I have the UltiCare 3/10cc, 31 Guage x 5/16", U-100 Syringes. I'm looking at it and do not see half lines. I see lines for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 is bold, etc. It looks like it would be difficult to go in between these lines since they are close together. Am I reading it right?

Lori, maybe I can give you a call if you're around for some help?

I need to give her a dose within the next few minutes.

Thanks,
Sheryl

Re: Weekend Update on Ashley

It might be easier to eyeball the microdoses in the U40 needles.

Without the half unit markings it is very difficult to eyeball the U100 needles because it is so small.

Re: Weekend Update on Ashley

Did I get the wrong ones? I thought i got the same ones as instructed on here. I forget where, but it was the same place where the microdosing instructions were.

Re: Weekend Update on Ashley

If there aren't markings on the left side between the unit markings then they are the wrong ones.

I buy mine at Walmart. I get the ReliOn, 3/10ml, 30 units, 30 guage, 8mm short needle, UPC bar code 81131 31173.

Re: Weekend Update on Ashley

Dammit! There are no half markings on the side...just one set of lines.

Guess i'll be going back to Walmart.

Re: Weekend Update on Ashley

I also buy them from Walmart- I get the Relion brand. The box flap does NOT specify 1/2 unit markings, but if you look through the bag, you can see the 1/2 unit marks. be sure to check before you pay. Good news is that they cost about $11 /100

You choose the needle length -- 1/2 in or short 5/16in

the syringe volume- I use 3/10ml which holds 30 units

and the gauge - mine are 29, those 31's you have are sharper (less ouchy), but Cody is fine with these.

heres an ad from Hocks that advertises 1/2 unit markings- dont know anything about these.

I do like the Relion's

Re: Weekend Update on Ashley

You can always use those syringes when you are at whole unit doses, that's how I used up the ones I bought by mistake.

The last few days have been crazy for me and it seems they will continue to be for a while now (personally, not with Ashley) Also, water got into my computer, so i was without for a couple of days until Dell replaced the motherboard....just got it back today. I haven't been able to get many readings in as i've been working long days.

I also went to Walmart to try to get the Relion U-40 syringes and they didn't have them. I'm going to try calling the AmericanDiabetesWholesale website and asking them which ones have the half marks and maybe I can exchange the ones i ordered before. I do like the UltiCare containers, so I hope they make them with the half marks...does anyone know?

Yesterday i gave a little over 1U AM & PM and today I gave 1.5, again this is eyeballing and I don't know if that's bad.

I have never seen u40 syringes with half unit markings, thats why folks use the u100 syringes with 1/2 unit markings plus the conversion chart.
for example:
You are giving approx 1.5u in a u40 syringe. When you get the u100's you could fill the new syringe to :
3.5 line for 1.4u;
or the 4 line would be 1.6u

you always refer to the dose in terms of a u40 syringe, ie you would mark his ss with 1.4u
