As If Life Wasn't Stressful Enough/BABY PIC UP!

Okay - so Fitzel's bg levels aren't stable yet. Still trying to decide on dosage. Testing her to the point where she's hiding behind the toilet.

Well, that's just not enough stress - oh no. We needed to add a 5 week old kitten that was going to be taken to the shelter tonight and dropped off in a box and left there by four young boys who dragged it out from under their house. And not handling her well at all - not out of menace - but out of being 8 year old boys who've never been taught that 5 week old kittens are fragile.

Well, being dropped off at the shelter with no food or water and knowing that the little one would be immediately disposed of....That was SO not going to happen. So now we have the 5 week old baby (a female blonde tabby) snuggled in a soft kitty carrier in a closed off room that all our other cats are camped in front of. Including Fitzel - who most definitely does not approve.

And just in case that's not enough to upset the household - there's still another baby under these kid's house. Seems mommy had 5 babies and was in the process of moving them. The kids interrupted and now we're not sure mommy will come back for the one still under the house. If she doesn't show up by tomorrow, then we will have 2 five week old babies in a closed off room - each in their own soft carrier.

The baby is sooo cute. It tries to hiss at us - but it doesn't quite come out as menacing as that little one thinks. We've named her AMMA. Yeah, are we suckers or what?

Re: As If Life Wasn't Stressful Enough

LOL- No you are not suckers...This is exactly what each and everyone here on this board (at least IMHO) would do. I personally could not let a 5 week old baby be sent to the shelter..
Do not get any ideas here- Shai- my inn is fuller than yours

Re: As If Life Wasn't Stressful Enough

Shai,

That makes me smile...especially as I sit here watching four of my former "five week old babies" (now two-year olds) wrestling. "I promise, honey, I'm only going to foster them"....that's how my brood grew to 12! :-D Enjoy!

Re: As If Life Wasn't Stressful Enough

21 here! A lot of work, a lot of stress but trust me the happiness they brought is beyond compare. Keep up your good work!

Re: As If Life Wasn't Stressful Enough

Shai,
Bless you for taking these babies in! Suckers? No way. What gets really interesting is when you start bringing other species into the mix:

We need pictures of the new arrivals!

Re: As If Life Wasn't Stressful Enough

Thank you for all the support on our new addition. 12! 21! Yikes!!!! You guys must live somewhere NOT here. We'd be so in trouble with animal reg and neighbors!! Definitely something you don't want to be. Los Angeles animal reg. has a hideous reputation for non contact of owners with strays and a very high kill ratio. This has been our experience only and if the above is unfair in another's eyes then I do apologize. This has been my family's experience with them. We just got our first major no kill shelter sponsored by Best Friends. cat_pet_icon

And Carl - love that pic!!!!! We used to have a multi-species household, only ours consisted of cats, dogs, rabbits and a raccoon. Oh, and a horse, but he wasn't kept in the house.

Amma has a vet appointment later this afternoon. I'm still dealing with Fitzel this morning, but will be going over to the boy's house in a bit to see about Amma's sibling. We didn't have any KMR so we watered down some FF and she ate that with gusto last night and this morning. But NO BM!!!! I stimulated her little tushie and we got her to pee. I'll have the vet check for constipation - but we are only guessing on her age and when we pick her up she still roots for mommy's teet.

We'll be picking up a bottle and some KMR for her today so she can have the suckling she still needs.

I'll post a pic as soon as I have a moment to take one.

Re: As If Life Wasn't Stressful Enough

Amma had her first vet visit today and all's well.

She weighs in at a whopping 13oz. (soooo tiny) And the vet thinks she's 4 weeks old not 5.And while the consensus is that she's a female - she's actually too young to sex. So we're going on the consensus vote right now, until something about Amma tells us she's not a girl.

Too little for shots or blood draws - but she did get her first worming meds. The tech said it tasted like bananas, but by the look on Amma's face, this little kitty doesn't like bananas.

She ate very well tonight - she had a couple teaspoons of kitten food and warm water mixed in slush - and some KMR - which she lapped from a plate after resoundingly rejecting the bottle.

We tried to get a pen for her to play in, but they all had bars too far apart. We're going to rig something up so she can play freely and have room to bat something toyish around. Our rooms are definitely NOT kitten friendly.

Promise pics soon.

Re: As If Life Wasn't Stressful Enough

Shai,

Glad to hear your new baby is doing well. Kittens are so much fun! We used a rabbit "playpen" when our many babies were little.

Congrats on the "no kill shelter"!! We had heard that one was opening soon when we visited Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah. Eveidently, So Cal had built it, but didn't have the $$ to open and run it so is leasing it to Best Friends for $1.

Technically, I'm only allowed 5 pets, however, I have an incredibly supportive vet and neighbors. I guess you could call me a 'reluctant' cat rescuer/foster mom. About 3 three years ago I started to notice a HUGE problem with stray/feral cats in my neighborhood. After contacting our local animal shelter, various rescue groups, and our 'no kill' shelter it was apparent that the "inns were full". I couldn't sit there and do nothing, especially when we started to see litters of kittens. With the help of my incredibly patient husband and our neighbors we began trapping the litters. To make a long story short, I have fostererd and re-homed a total of 8 cats/kittens. I have a small (3) feral colony that I have trapped, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and feed. The rest of the fur family consists of my original adopted rescues, and the few cats/kittens that were less adoptable that have a forever home with me now. My family calls me "the crazy cat lady". I keep the majority of the fur family indoors in an attempt to keep the impact on my neighbors minimal. My house is just big enough that they all have their own beds, plenty of toys, cat boxes, bowls, and climbers/scratchers. So....unless someone turned me in I don't have an issue with Animal Control. I think everyone around me sees that these cats are well-cared for, healthy, and happy. What's the alternative?

Looking forward to the pics!

Have you tried a bit of Neosporin ointment with pain relief on the ear to be tested? Apply a dab several minutes before testing, wipe off, then test. The ointment (not cream) helps the blood bead up and reduces some of the annoyance of testing.

Re: As If Life Wasn't Stressful Enough

Hi BJM -

I don't know where I'd be without Neosporin Pain Relief Ointment. Unfortunately, Fitzel's ears still hurt her.

Thank you for adding that, however, because if I didn't already use it, I sure would want to.

And now.... Finally... A BABY PIC!!!!!

We got little Amma a new house today.

She's been living in a large cat carrier, large, but only because she's 13oz of furr.

Now, she's got a 4' (tall) by 3' x 2' Kitten Corral - complete with a ladder to climb and a soft padded shelf to climb to.

She keeps refusing KMR so we've abandoned it in favor of slushy kitten food pate - (warm water, kitten food, mix until you've got a stinky slurry. Yummmmmm...)

I'll see about getting some views of her in her new digs.
