Arthritis medicines for 20 year old

Hi all. I am new to this forum. I have a 20 year old Siamese boy who I adopted last year. He's had diabetes for at least 5 years that I know of.

He's in pretty good shape for being so old but he has some arthritis in his hips. His vet has been giving him Gabapentin but recently due to covid they are unable to keep enough stock.

Are there any good substitutes I can get for him for now in the meantime? I found this on Amazon, would it be ok for his diabetes?

That I don't know :oops:
We don't ever use it here for cats, but I know a lot of people on it. We use metacam in 0.5 strength for cats, specially for arthritis and post op care.
 
I use human gabapentin for my Moxie. I divide a 100mg capsule in two and administer 50 mg AM and 50 PM. It takes terrible so I put it in a capsule and pill Moxie.

I was originally supposed to re-home him for his previous owner but of course I couldn't give him up. He is the sweetest old man who is my baby boy.

What dose gabapentin is he on?
 
Would these pills I linked from Amazon be ok with the Gabapentin? I read the reviews and they seem like they work but I want to make sure they aren't dangerous for diabetics.

Yes! They’re the best! I found my sweet boy in the woods behind my Grandmother’s house. I also meant to re-home him initially, but it was meant to be. <3

Ok thanks I'm going to call his vet tomorrow and hopefully I can get a new prescription without them giving me a hassle. What are your thoughts on these homeopathic pills? I'm wondering if they would be good to give him along with the Gabapentin.

I don't have any experience with the homeopathic pills, sorry.

The vet may have some on hand. You want size 3, 4, or 5 (size 5 is the smallest – might be harder to fill with powder.).

He actually doesn't seem to notice the taste and drinks it easily mixed with water and his food. He only has a few teeth left and taking a capsule as is would be a struggle with him.
 
Yes!!! Without a doubt the best treatment for arthritis is adequan shots!!!!! My cat had been taking them for three years. She has severe arthritis caused by acromegaly. Without them she wouldn't be walking right now. It's great stuff.... Life changing.

How much do you pay for them? I live in NYC and don't have pet insurance. I don't think his arthritis is that bad thankfully. He walks around fine but he has some deposits in his spine so he's not flexible enough to be very active like a normal cat.

I'm happy your kitty got some relief!

I order it online... I think it's like $132 for two vials... but that will last you about a year, so really not bad. You do the shots yourself at home, just like insulin shots, but need a prescription. Cats use the dog one. https://www.chewy.com/adequan-canine-injectable-dogs/dp/176383

The usual protocol is 2 shots per week for the first four weeks, then one shot a week for four weeks, then once a month. We actually do once a week ongoing because otherwise she limps... more so in the winter months than summer. But if your cat's joints aren't bad you probably only need a shot ever 3-4 weeks. :)

Ok thanks I'll look into that and ask his vet about it. I'll do anything I can to give my boy a comfortable retirement.
