? Are renal diets suitable?

Rom is off to the vet shortly and no doubt I will be offered a renal diet due to CKD being diagnosed yesterday. Obviously dry is out of the question, but is the wet renal food suitable for diabetics?

Hi! I'm having the same issue and as far as I can see, the renal diets are way too high in carbs,

I think most of the are in the MC to HC range. I used to use Jones' civvie sister's in order to bring his number up until I found out it bothered his IBD.

Most of the kidney diets at least the ones if found are seriously high carbs so not good for a diabetic cat, because the manufacturers substitute protein with carbs, so that's something you should discuss with your vet . One of the purposes of the renal diets is to lower phosphorus and there are regular comercial foods that are low carbs and low phosphorus

Of course it depends on what stage he is ( how advanced his CKD is) he may need some other measures. It may help if you could add his labs to the SS

Thanks @Veronica & Babu-chiri , nut is that the US foods? I'm in the UK. I did tell the vet when she started saying she would talk to Hills and Royal Canin about suitable foods for diabetics but I quickly stopped her. She knows I know what I am talking about tough, as she said the whole surgery is impressed with how I am managing their diabetes.

@Sue484 unfortunately, this list doesn't include the carb percentages, but those can of course be calculated. What it does give you is a list of UK canned foods by phosphorus level. You're looking to stay definitely under 1% phosphorus on a dry matter basis and ideally under around 0.75%, although raised phosphorus can also be managed with a phosphorus binder if you have to go a little over the ideal levels http://www.felinecrf.org/canned_food_uk.htm

Rom's phosphorous level at the minute is 1.66, so not too bad. Maybe I can carry on feeding what I am already feeding?

Sorry to hear that Rom has CKD, but it can sneak up on you. I had blood work done for Maxie right after Tuxie passed and the levels were not concerning. Three months later I had them redone along with thyroid panel and fPLI to rule out those issues and it showed a stage 2 CKD. Her phosphorous levels are 1.6 down from 1.64 3 months earlier but the Urea levels went up quite a bit and the SDMA was 19 with a reference range of 0-14 at IDEXX. Since Maxie is a picky eater at the best of times and he FD is not regulated I preferred to stay with my home made and use a small dose of binder. I will be retesting her in a month or so to see if there has been any improvement.

Hopefully his levels will go down with the fluid. Although high, they are nowhere near as high as my previous cats. I will try and post the lab results tonight. I remember the phosphorous being 1.66, so hopefully he can stay on the same food as his diabetes is regulated. I will use a binder if I have to. I completely missed that Tuxie has passed. Thank you . 17 weeks since Tuxie passed and still as fresh as if it were yesterday.

Although both Maxie's and Rom's phosphorous are still within the high normal range the vet and I discussed that with the higher urea levels and SDMA creeping above target ranges that it would be prudent to start with the binder since I won't feed the renal prescription foods and Maxie is such a picky eater that I would rather stay with what works for her. As kitties get older it is preferable to have the phosphorous levels on the mid to low normal range.

I hope you can find a suitable food that he likes, in my case since none of the low fos low carbs comercial food is available in Mexico I've started home cooking sice having his DB unregulated will actually damage more his kidneys than the food
