….My question is this: is it relatively safe to keep my Herman treated monthly with a product like advantage in case that is contributing to some of his itchiness despite the fact that I don’t see any actual fleas? Or should it be only used if really needed (ie you see fleas in the coat). Or is there a different product that is better? Any application tips?
More background….I am beginning to suspect my cat Hermann is very sensitive to fleas. He has access to the outdoors all day long (not evenings) through a cat flap in my house… I live on a farm property. He loves to roll around in the dirt. Few weeks ago we had a BG increase and tail pulling issues, also coinciding with a new cat family member (stress?)….. We tested for a UTI, which came back negative and while I was there, I mentioned that he seems a little itchy and is pulling his tail so they looked him over for fleas and didn’t see any obvious signs. The vet technician said that some cats are really really sensitive, and even though there may not be any obvious signs of fleas there may be a few, and that might be all it takes to get some cats out of sorts, pulling their tails and itching.
I treated him with advantage II and I do think the tail pulling subsided quite quickly after that but it could’ve also been that he was getting used to his new family member. I also put in some felliway diffusers, so I’m not entirely sure what helped fix the problem… I had a hectic weekend with lots going on here at the farm, so again stress might be a trigger, but I noticed him pulling his tail a little bit this morning and perhaps over the weekend and itching his chin a bit more than usual…could be stress, but…..if it may be fleas, should I treat? Or use sparingly. I should also mention it hasn’t been a full month since his last treatment, so is that a concern can you treat more frequently than a month?
