Dasher seems to be starving all the time and I've taken away his hard food for grazing I'm feeding him canned FF throughout the day. How long once he starts Lantus can I expect to see his appetite slow down. From what I understand is body really is starving so I don't want to not give him food. He starts on his Lantus tomorrow.

You will need to feed more than normal for awhile until he gets regulated. Until then, he isn't using his food properly and will need to take in more. Did Dasher lose a lot of weight before he was diagnosed? My guy did, and it took quite some time before he got back to normal weight. Even now that he's regulated, he will ask for more food when he finds himself in higher numbers. It may take a few months.

He did loose about a pound as of last Thursday. I'm glad he's not missing his hard food with all the extra can he's getting. His brother on the other hand is not very happy but he going to have to adjust....no more hard food in this house!

Saoirse was initially treated with Caninsulin so she was in unregulated numbers for many hours during each cycle. Even so, I noticed a reduction in her persistent and sometimes frantic begging for food relatively soon after commencement of insulin treatment. It did take a good while to get back to normal (caveat - Saoirse had a pancreatitis flare which complicated things).

I found it really helpful to monitor Saoirse's weight at home. I got a reasonably-priced digital baby scale from ebay. I gave her extra food until her weight got back to normal. I now weigh her once a week and if necessary make minor adjustments to how much I feed her in order to keep her weight in the optimum range.
